What Is an eSIM? A Plain-English Guide for Travellers

An eSIM is a SIM you download instead of insert. Here is what that means, how it differs from a plastic SIM card and why it suits travel.

If you have ever wrestled a SIM tray open with a paper clip in an arrival hall, the idea behind an eSIM will make sense straight away. An eSIM does the same job as the little plastic card — it tells mobile networks who you are and what you are allowed to use — but there is no card to insert. The SIM is downloaded to your phone.

This guide explains what an eSIM actually is, how it differs from the SIM card you already know, why so many travellers now use one for mobile data abroad, and the few things that must be true before it will work on your phone.

What "eSIM" actually means

The "e" stands for embedded. Inside every eSIM-capable phone is a small chip fixed to the main board. On its own it holds nothing useful. When you add an eSIM, the phone downloads a profile — a secure package of credentials and settings issued for a mobile line — and stores it on that chip.

That profile is what people mean when they say "an eSIM". It plays exactly the role a physical SIM card plays: it identifies your line to the network and decides what service you get. The only real difference is how it reaches you: over the internet rather than in an envelope or across a shop counter.

A few related terms you will see:

  • eSIM card: a common search phrase, but slightly misleading. There is no card to buy or hold; the chip is already inside the phone.
  • eSIM profile: the downloadable line itself. A phone can usually store several profiles and switch between them in Settings.
  • QR code: the usual way a profile is delivered. Scanning it tells your phone where to fetch the profile from.

eSIM vs a physical SIM card

Functionally the two are equivalent, but day to day they behave very differently.

  • Getting one: a physical SIM has to be posted to you or bought in person. An eSIM can be bought online and arrives as a QR code.
  • Switching: swapping a plastic SIM means ejecting the tray and keeping track of a fingernail-sized card. Switching between eSIM lines is a menu option.
  • Keeping your number: in a phone with one SIM slot, inserting a travel SIM means taking your own out. With an eSIM, your usual SIM stays where it is and both lines can be active together.
  • Loss and damage: an embedded chip cannot fall out, go missing in a hotel room or be pulled from a stolen phone and reused.

What does not change is the network side. Your phone connects to the same kinds of mobile networks, using the same 4G or 5G technology, whichever form the SIM takes.

Why travellers use eSIMs

For travel, the eSIM's biggest advantage is timing. You can buy and install a data plan at home, days before you fly, and simply switch it on when you land. No queue at an airport kiosk, no hunting for a phone shop in an unfamiliar language, and no relying on patchy airport Wi-Fi to book a ride.

The second advantage is that your own number stays in the phone. Most travel eSIMs, HelloSIM's included, are data-only: they give you mobile internet abroad while your regular SIM remains in place for calls and texts. WhatsApp and similar apps carry on using your usual number, because they simply run over whichever line is providing data.

The third is cost control. Using your home carrier's data abroad is often billed per day or per megabyte, and those charges can mount up quickly, so check your current tariff before you travel. A prepaid travel eSIM has a fixed allowance that you pay for once, up front.

How buying and installing an eSIM works

The outline is similar wherever you buy. With HelloSIM it looks like this:

  1. 1Choose a plan for your destination — a single country, a region such as Europe or Asia Pacific, or the Global plan — based on how much data and how many days you need.
  2. 2Pay at checkout. You can buy as a guest with just an email address; an account is optional.
  3. 3The QR code is delivered by email straight away, and it is also stored in your HelloSIM account and app.
  4. 4At home, on Wi-Fi, install it. On iPhone go to Settings → Mobile Data (Cellular in some regions) → Add eSIM and scan the code. On Android look under Settings → Network & internet or Connections → SIMs or SIM manager → Add eSIM; the wording varies by brand.
  5. 5When you arrive, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on Data Roaming for that line.

Two details catch people out. First, the plan's validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy it, so installing early costs you nothing. Second, roaming must be on for the eSIM line to connect abroad, with no extra cost because the data is prepaid. Your home line is the opposite: turn its data roaming off so it cannot run up charges in the background.

If you cannot scan the QR code, the same email contains an SM-DP+ address and activation code for installing the eSIM manually.

What your phone needs

An eSIM is only useful if your phone can take one, and two conditions must both be true.

The phone supports eSIM. Typical examples are iPhone XS and XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models along with many A models. The quickest check is to look in Settings for an "Add eSIM" option. Be aware that many iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao have two physical SIM slots instead of eSIM.

The phone is carrier-unlocked. A phone locked to your home network will refuse a line from any other operator, eSIM or not. If your phone came on a contract, ask your carrier whether it is unlocked before you buy a travel plan.

The limits worth knowing

An eSIM is clever, but a few practical limits apply.

  • One phone per eSIM. A profile is installed on a single device, so buy one per phone if several people are travelling.
  • No local number on data-only plans. You cannot make regular calls or send SMS on a data-only eSIM. Use internet calling apps instead, and keep your own SIM active for texts such as bank codes.
  • Coverage follows the networks. Every HelloSIM destination has 4G/LTE, while 5G depends on the destination: you get it where the local networks on that destination's list carry a 5G label and your handset can use it.
  • Don't delete it mid-trip. Removing the profile in Settings removes the line. If something isn't working, try the usual checks or contact support first.

Should you get stuck, HelloSIM support is available by email at [email protected], with replies within 24 hours, and through the live chat in the HelloSIM app.

Frequently asked questions

Is an eSIM the same as a SIM card?
It does the same job — identifying your line to the network — but it is a downloadable profile stored on a chip built into the phone rather than a removable plastic card.
Do I need a special phone to use an eSIM?
The phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Look for an "Add eSIM" option in Settings; iPhone XS/XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer and recent Samsung Galaxy models typically have one.
Will I lose my phone number if I add an eSIM?
No. A travel eSIM is added alongside your existing SIM, so your number stays in the phone for calls and texts while the eSIM handles mobile data.
Can I use WhatsApp with a travel eSIM?
Yes. Your WhatsApp account remains linked to your normal number; the eSIM only supplies the internet connection it runs on.
When should I install a travel eSIM?
Install it at home over Wi-Fi before you leave. Validity only starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so installing early doesn't use up any days.
Can I make normal phone calls with a HelloSIM eSIM?
HelloSIM eSIMs are data-only, with no local number for regular calls or SMS. You can call and message over data with apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime or Telegram, while your own SIM still handles regular calls and texts.
