Power sockets and voltage
Malaysia uses type G sockets — the same rectangular three-pin plugs as in the UK. The voltage is 240V at 50Hz.
- Bring a type G adapter, because European-style (type C/F) plugs won't fit.
- Most phone and laptop chargers work on 100–240V, so you won't need a transformer.
- Larger hotels in Kuala Lumpur and Penang often have USB ports as well.
Basic language
The official language is Malay (Bahasa Malaysia), but English is widely spoken in cities, hotels and restaurants.
- Terima kasih — thank you
- Selamat pagi — good morning
- Berapa harga? — how much is it?
- Sedap — delicious (handy at the food stalls!)
What to pack
Malaysia is hot and humid all year round (28–33°C).
- Light, breathable clothes in cotton or linen.
- Sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent with DEET.
- A shawl or scarf for visiting mosques and temples (shoulders and knees covered).
- A rain jacket for the afternoon monsoon showers.
Staying online
Wi-Fi is available in hotels and cafés, but don't rely on it for navigation. A local eSIM gives you 4G/LTE mobile data wherever there's network coverage.
7 quick tips
- Grab is the app for taxis and food delivery — cheaper and safer than flagging down a regular taxi.
- Eat at the hawker centres — a plate of nasi lemak or char kway teow costs 6–12 ringgit (RM).
- Carry some cash for small purchases, but cards and the Touch 'n Go eWallet are accepted almost everywhere.
- The MRT/LRT in Kuala Lumpur is clean, cheap and skips the traffic jams.
- Take your shoes off before entering a home or a temple.
- Stick to bottled water.
- Respect local customs, especially during Ramadan.
