First-Timer's Guide to Portugal: Essential Travel Tips

Visiting Portugal for the first time? Practical tips on cards and cash, plugs, time zones, tipping, useful apps and what to do in your first hour after landing.

A first trip to Portugal is easy to plan, but a handful of local habits and practical details will save you time and small frustrations. Here's what to know before you go and what to do when you land.

Money and cards

Portugal uses the euro. Contactless cards and phone payments such as Apple Pay and Google Pay are widely accepted in cities, hotels and larger restaurants, but small cafés, market stalls, rural tascas and some taxis may prefer cash or have a minimum card spend. Keep a little cash in coins and small notes for these moments.

Cash machines are called Multibanco. Use ones attached to a bank rather than standalone machines in tourist streets, and if a screen offers to convert the amount to your home currency, decline and choose euros.

Plugs, time zones and opening hours

  • Plugs: Type C and Type F, the round two-pin European style, on a 230 V supply. Travellers from the UK, Ireland, the US and many other countries need an adapter; most phone and laptop chargers handle the voltage fine.
  • Time zone: mainland Portugal and Madeira are on the same time as the UK and Ireland, with clocks moving forward in summer. The Azores are one hour behind.
  • Opening hours: in smaller towns, some shops close for lunch and on Sundays. Mondays are a common closing day for museums and monuments.

Tipping and everyday etiquette

Tipping is a gesture rather than an obligation: rounding up the bill or leaving a little extra for good service is enough. Lingering at the table is normal, so don't wait for the bill to appear: catch the waiter's eye and ask for it.

Start every interaction with "bom dia" (good morning) or "boa tarde" (good afternoon). Don't assume Spanish is spoken; English or a few words of Portuguese go down much better. Cover your shoulders when entering churches, and take your time over meals, which are meant to be enjoyed slowly.

Useful apps to download

  • A maps app with offline maps of the areas you'll visit.
  • Uber or Bolt for rides in cities and on the Algarve.
  • The CP app for train times and tickets.
  • A translation app with camera mode for menus and signs.
  • Messaging apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime or Telegram for calls home over data.
  • A weather app, ideally one that also shows sea and wave conditions.

Your first hour in Portugal

  1. 1Install your eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you fly.
  2. 2When you land, switch on the HelloSIM line, set it as your line for mobile data and turn on Data Roaming for that line.
  3. 3Turn data roaming off on your home line to avoid unexpected charges.
  4. 4Buy a reusable travel card at the airport metro station in Lisbon, or an Andante card in Porto.
  5. 5Send your accommodation address to your maps app and check the route before leaving the airport.
  6. 6Pack comfortable shoes with grip for cobbled hills and a light layer for breezy Atlantic evenings.

Plan a realistic itinerary

Portugal looks small on the map, but it rewards slow travel. For a first week, Lisbon and Porto plus one extra region, such as Sintra, the Douro Valley or the Algarve, is plenty. Book popular sights like Pena Palace ahead in busy months, and leave space for long lunches and sunset viewpoints.

Stay connected in Portugal

Arriving with working data means you can find the metro, message your hosts and order a ride before you've even left the terminal. Visitors from the EU may be able to use their home plan, but many other travellers face daily roaming fees, so check your current tariff. HelloSIM's data-only eSIM goes on your phone at home, connects once you're in Portugal and leaves your regular number free for calls and texts. If you run low, add more data to the same eSIM in the app or your account without reinstalling anything.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need cash in Portugal?
Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere in cities, but a little cash is useful for small cafés, markets and rural areas. Withdraw from bank-owned Multibanco machines and choose to be charged in euros.
What plug adapter do I need for Portugal?
Portugal uses Type C and Type F plugs with a 230 V supply, the standard round two-pin European style. Visitors from the UK, the US and many other countries need an adapter.
What time zone is Portugal in?
Mainland Portugal and Madeira follow Western European Time, the same as the UK, and move their clocks forward in summer. The Azores are one hour behind the mainland.
Will my phone work in Portugal?
Most modern phones work fine, but roaming on your home plan can be costly if Portugal isn't included in your tariff. With an eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked phone, you can use a HelloSIM data eSIM while your own SIM stays active for calls and texts.
