Essential Maldives Travel Tips for First-Timers

Heading to the Maldives for the first time? Here is what to know about plugs, language, packing, connectivity and the small details that make island-hopping smooth.

Before you go

The Maldives is a string of around 1,200 islands, and getting between them is half the trip. From Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé you may take a speedboat, a domestic flight, or a Trans Maldivian seaplane to your resort or guesthouse. Confirm your transfer time before you fly, as seaplanes only run in daylight.

Plugs and voltage

The Maldives uses Type D and Type G sockets, with Type G (the same three-pin plug as the UK) most common in resorts and hotels. Voltage is 230V at 50Hz, so most phone and laptop chargers work fine. Bring a UK-style or universal adapter, and a small power bank for long boat or seaplane days.

Language basics

The official language is Dhivehi, but English is widely spoken in resorts, guesthouses and shops. A few friendly words go a long way:

  • Assalaamu alaikum - hello
  • Shukuriyaa - thank you
  • Kihineh? - how are you?

What to pack

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (many resorts ban coral-damaging brands)
  • Light, breathable clothing and a rash guard for snorkelling
  • Modest cover-ups for local islands like Maafushi or Thulusdhoo, where bikinis are only allowed on marked tourist beaches
  • Sandals, a dry bag, and any prescription medicine you need

Quick tips

  • Carry US dollars for tips and small buys; cards are accepted at resorts but cash helps on local islands.
  • Respect local-island rules - the Maldives is Muslim, and alcohol is served only on resort islands and licensed boats.
  • Book excursions early - manta and whale-shark trips in Baa and South Ari Atoll fill up fast.
  • Stay hydrated - the heat is intense year-round; the dry season runs roughly November to April.
  • Snorkel at slack tide for calmer, clearer water around house reefs.
  • Tip discreetly - around 10% or a few dollars per day for staff and boat crew is appreciated.
  • Watch the tides before walking out on sandbanks, which vanish at high water.
