Why Kosovo is so affordable
Kosovo is one of the cheapest countries to travel in Europe. Even though the official currency is the euro, prices stay far below Western European levels. A coffee, a hearty meal and a city walk can all happen for the price of a single lunch in Paris.
Daily budgets
Here is roughly what you should plan per person, per day:
- Backpacker: 25-35 EUR (hostel dorm, bakery food, walking, local buses)
- Mid-range: 45-70 EUR (private guesthouse or 3-star hotel, restaurants, a day trip)
- Comfort: 90 EUR and up (boutique hotels, taxis, guided tours, nicer dining)
Sample prices
- Espresso or macchiato: 1-1.50 EUR
- Burek (filled pastry) from a bakery: 0.50-1 EUR
- Local beer (Peja) in a bar: 1.50-2.50 EUR
- Plate of qebapa with bread and salad: 3-5 EUR
- Dinner for two with drinks at a good restaurant: 20-30 EUR
- Hostel dorm bed in Pristina: 10-15 EUR
- Mid-range double room: 30-50 EUR
- City bus ticket in Pristina: 0.50 EUR
- Intercity bus Pristina to Prizren: 4-5 EUR
Money and cards
Kosovo uses the euro, so eurozone travellers avoid exchange fees entirely. Cash is still king in markets, small cafes and rural areas, so carry small notes. Card payments work in larger hotels, supermarkets and modern restaurants in Pristina, Prizren and Peja, but never rely on cards alone. ATMs are widely available in towns; some charge a fee, so withdraw larger amounts at once.
Smart ways to save
- Eat where locals eat: bakeries and grill houses are cheap and excellent.
- Use intercity buses instead of taxis between towns; they are frequent and cost a few euros.
- Drink tap-served espresso standing or sitting at the bar for less.
- Travel in spring or autumn for lower room rates and pleasant weather.
- Base yourself in Pristina and do day trips to Prizren, the Rugova Gorge and Gjakova.
A typical day on a mid-range budget
Breakfast burek and macchiato (2 EUR), bus to a sight (2 EUR), lunch of qebapa (4 EUR), afternoon coffee (1.50 EUR), guesthouse night (35 EUR) and a relaxed dinner with a Peja beer (15 EUR). That is around 60 EUR for a full, comfortable day.
