How expensive is Kuwait?
Kuwait is a high-income Gulf country, and prices can surprise first-timers. The currency, the Kuwaiti dinar (KWD), is one of the world's strongest, so small dinar figures hide real value. As a rule, eating local and using ride apps keeps costs reasonable, while hotels and alcohol-free nightlife (Kuwait is dry) shift spending toward malls, dining and day trips.
Daily budget ranges
- Budget traveler: 15-22 KWD per day. Shawarma meals, machboos at a local spot, public transport or shared rides, and a modest hotel or hostel bed.
- Mid-range: 35-60 KWD per day. A 3-star hotel, two restaurant meals, taxis, and one paid attraction.
- Comfort: 90 KWD and up. 4 to 5-star hotels in Kuwait City or Salmiya, fine dining and private transfers.
Sample prices
- Shawarma wrap: 0.5-0.8 KWD
- Machboos or grilled fish meal at a local restaurant: 2-4 KWD
- Coffee at a cafe: 1.5-2.5 KWD
- Mid-range restaurant main: 4-7 KWD
- 1.5L bottled water: 0.2-0.3 KWD
- Kuwait Towers viewing: around 3 KWD
- The Avenues mall entry: free (a major attraction itself)
- City taxi or Careem ride across town: 2-5 KWD
- Day in Souq Al-Mubarakiya snacks and tea: 3-5 KWD
Money and cards
Cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted in malls, hotels and chain restaurants. Carry some cash for Souq Al-Mubarakiya, small eateries and taxis. ATMs are everywhere; withdraw dinar rather than paying card surcharges. Tipping is not mandatory but rounding up is appreciated. Note that alcohol is illegal, so there is no bar spending to budget for.
Ways to save
- Eat where locals eat. A filling shawarma or machboos costs a fraction of mall food courts.
- Use Careem or Uber instead of street taxis to avoid fare haggling.
- Visit free sights: the Corniche, Grand Mosque (free guided tours), Scientific Center grounds, and The Avenues.
- Travel in shoulder months (March, April, October, November) for better hotel rates and bearable heat.
- Refill water and carry a bottle; summer heat makes constant buying costly.
