How much does a trip to Latvia cost?
Latvia is one of the better-value spots in the eurozone. Prices in Riga sit below Western European capitals, and they drop further once you reach Sigulda, Cesis or the seaside town of Jurmala.
Latvia uses the euro (EUR). Below are realistic per-person daily budgets, excluding flights.
Daily budgets
- Budget: 40 to 60 EUR. Hostel dorm, lunch at a canteen, public transport, free sights.
- Mid-range: 90 to 140 EUR. A 3-star hotel or solid apartment, restaurant meals, a museum or two.
- Comfort: 200 EUR and up. Boutique hotel in Old Riga, fine dining, spa and taxis.
Sample prices
- Coffee: 2.50 to 3.50 EUR
- Lunch at a self-service canteen like Lido: 6 to 9 EUR
- Three-course dinner for two with wine: 50 to 70 EUR
- Half-litre local beer (Valmiermuiza, Uzavas): 3.50 to 5 EUR
- Riga public transport single ride: 1.50 EUR (cheaper with an e-talons card)
- Taxi across central Riga: 6 to 10 EUR; Bolt is often cheaper
- Train Riga to Sigulda: about 2 to 3 EUR
- Hostel dorm bed: 15 to 25 EUR; mid-range double: 55 to 90 EUR
- Entry to the Latvian National Museum of Art: around 6 EUR
Money and cards
Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including buses, market stalls and small cafes. Contactless and Apple or Google Pay are standard. Carry 20 to 30 EUR in cash for the Central Market, rural guesthouses and small kiosks. Use bank ATMs (Swedbank, SEB) and always choose to be charged in euros, not your home currency, to dodge poor conversion rates. Tipping is modest: round up or leave 5 to 10 percent for good service.
Saving tips
- Eat your main meal at lunch, when canteens and restaurants offer cheaper set menus.
- Buy a rechargeable e-talons card for cheaper city transport.
- Many highlights are free: the Old Town, the Central Market, Bastejkalns park and the Art Nouveau district on Alberta iela.
- Travel by regional train or bus; intercity buses to Cesis or Liepaja cost only a few euros.
- Shop at Rimi, Maxima or Lidl for picnic supplies instead of eating out every meal.
- Visit shoulder season (May, June, September) for lower prices and fewer crowds.
