When to go to Ireland
Ireland's weather is famously changeable, so the question is less about avoiding rain and more about choosing the trade-off between sunshine, crowds and price. The good news: the country is beautiful year-round, and you are never far from a warm pub when the sky opens.
The seasons at a glance
- Spring (March-May): Mild, fresh and increasingly bright. Daffodils, lambing season and quieter roads. Highs around 9-15C.

Peak season runs from June to August, plus the Christmas weeks. Expect the best chance of dry, sunny days, full Dublin and Galway, and the highest prices for flights, hire cars and rural B&Bs.
Shoulder season (April-May and September-October) is the sweet spot. Days are long enough to drive the Wild Atlantic Way comfortably, attractions like the Cliffs of Moher and the Ring of Kerry are open without summer queues, and accommodation is noticeably cheaper.
Low season (November-March) suits city breaks. Dublin, Cork and Belfast stay lively, museums are quiet, and prices drop, though many rural attractions cut their hours.

- March: St Patrick's Festival in Dublin, around the 17th, with parades nationwide.
- May: Listowel Writers' Week; the Cork International Choral Festival.
- June: Bloomsday in Dublin (16th), celebrating James Joyce.
- July: Galway International Arts Festival; the Galway Races later in the month.
- August: Puck Fair in Killorglin; the Rose of Tralee; the Dublin Horse Show.
- September: Galway International Oyster Festival; the All-Ireland hurling and football finals.
- October: Cork Jazz Festival; Dublin Theatre Festival; Halloween, which Ireland claims as its own.
- December: Christmas markets in Galway and Belfast.
