The Best Time to Visit Israel: Seasons, Weather & Festivals

From spring wildflowers in the Galilee to Tel Aviv beach summers, here's exactly when to visit Israel for great weather, fewer crowds, and the best festivals.

When to go to Israel

Israel packs Mediterranean coast, desert, and mountains into a small country, so the weather varies a lot by region. For most travelers, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the sweet spot: warm days, cool evenings, and manageable crowds.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is arguably the best season. Temperatures in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv sit around 20 to 26 C, the Galilee and Golan turn green, and wildflowers like red anemones blanket the north. The Dead Sea and Eilat are pleasantly warm without the brutal summer heat.

  • Passover (Pesach) usually falls in April; many sites stay open but expect domestic crowds and higher prices.
  • The Jerusalem Marathon runs in spring.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is hot and dry. The coast (Tel Aviv, Haifa) is humid but ideal for beach days, while Jerusalem stays drier thanks to altitude. Avoid midday hikes in the Negev, Dead Sea, and Eilat, where temperatures regularly exceed 38 to 42 C.

  • Tel Aviv beaches and nightlife peak now.
  • Tel Aviv Pride (June) is one of the biggest in the world.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn brings relief from the heat and is excellent for both cities and the desert. The High Holidays cluster here.

  • Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur (September/October): on Yom Kippur the whole country effectively shuts down, roads empty, and no public transport runs.
  • Sukkot follows, a lively, festive week.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is mild on the coast (12 to 18 C) but rainy, and Jerusalem can be cold with occasional snow. The desert and Eilat stay sunny and warm, making them perfect winter escapes. This is low season, so prices and crowds drop.

Peak vs shoulder season

  • Peak: Jewish holidays (Passover, Sukkot), July to August on the coast. Book early and expect higher prices.
  • Shoulder: March to May and September to November offer the best balance.
  • Low: mid-winter, ideal for budget travelers and desert sun.

Quick tips

  • Plan around Shabbat (Friday sunset to Saturday night) when shops, transport, and many restaurants close, especially in Jerusalem.
  • Check the Hebrew holiday calendar before booking, as dates shift each year.
