Ireland Travel Budget: Daily Costs and How to Save

What does a trip to Ireland really cost? Realistic daily budgets, sample prices for food, transport and pints, plus money tips for visitors.

How much does Ireland cost per day?

Ireland is one of Western Europe's pricier destinations, but smart planning keeps it manageable. Here are realistic daily budgets per person, excluding flights.

  • Backpacker: 70 to 95 EUR a day (hostel dorm, self-catering, walking, free sights)
  • Mid-range: 130 to 200 EUR a day (3-star hotel or B&B, restaurant meals, some tours)
  • Comfort: 280 EUR and up (4-star hotels, taxis, guided day trips, fine dining)

Dublin, Galway and Killarney run highest. Smaller towns in the west and midlands are noticeably cheaper.

Sample prices

  • Hostel dorm bed: 25 to 45 EUR; mid-range double room: 120 to 180 EUR
  • Pint of Guinness: 6 to 7 EUR in Dublin, less in rural pubs
  • Casual pub lunch (toastie, soup, fish and chips): 12 to 18 EUR
  • Restaurant main course: 22 to 32 EUR
  • Coffee: 3.50 to 4.50 EUR; bottle of water: 2 EUR
  • Dublin Leap Visitor Card (3 days unlimited transport): 40 EUR
  • Guinness Storehouse ticket: from around 30 EUR
  • Cliffs of Moher entry: about 10 EUR

Getting around

Intercity trains (Irish Rail) and Expressway or Citylink coaches connect the main cities. Dublin to Galway by bus is often 15 to 20 EUR if booked ahead. Renting a car runs 35 to 70 EUR a day plus fuel and tolls, but it is the best way to reach the Wild Atlantic Way and Ring of Kerry at your own pace. Remember Ireland drives on the left.

Money and cards

Ireland uses the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and contactless and Apple or Google Pay are standard, even for small pub rounds. Carry 30 to 50 EUR cash for rural pubs, markets and tips. ATMs are widely available; avoid the dynamic currency conversion prompt and always choose to be charged in euro.

Ways to save

  • Eat your main meal at lunchtime, when many restaurants offer set menus
  • Book the Heritage Card if visiting several castles and historic sites
  • Travel midweek and outside July to August for cheaper rooms
  • Buy a Leap Card for cheaper city transport than single tickets
  • Many top draws (Phoenix Park, National Museum, coastal walks) are free
