How much does Iraq cost?
Iraq is far cheaper than most travelers expect, though hotel prices climb in Erbil and Baghdad. Your biggest variables are accommodation and the cost of a private car or driver, since public transport between cities is limited.
Most prices are quoted in Iraqi dinar (IQD), but hotels, tours and many shops happily take US dollars. Carry both.
Daily budget estimates
- Budget backpacker: 45 to 70 USD per day. Basic guesthouse, street food, shared taxis, one or two paid sites.
- Mid-range: 90 to 150 USD per day. Comfortable hotel, restaurant meals, a hired car for day trips.
- Comfort/private tour: 200 USD and up. Better hotels, private driver, guided visits.
Solo travelers pay more because a private driver costs the same whether one or three people split it.

Money and cards
Iraq runs mostly on cash. Bring clean, newer US dollar bills, as torn or pre-2013 notes are often refused. ATMs exist in Erbil and Baghdad but can be unreliable, so withdraw a buffer when one works. Cards are accepted at upscale hotels and malls only. Change money at official exchange offices in city centers for the best rate.

- Eat where locals eat: kebab and falafel shops cost a fraction of hotel restaurants.
- Share long-distance taxis instead of hiring a whole car.
- Travel in the Kurdistan Region (Erbil, Sulaymaniyah) where logistics are easier and cheaper.
