Whether it's a cheeky week in Bali, a ski trip to Japan or the big Euro summer you've been saving for, you'll want your phone working the minute you land. Daily roaming packs from Australian telcos are easy to switch on and just as easy to forget about until the bill turns up. Here's how roaming from Australia usually works, how a data-only travel eSIM fits in, and how to get it sorted before you head to the airport.
Roaming from Australia: what it usually costs
Most Australian telcos sell international roaming as a daily pack. You're charged for each day you use your phone overseas, and those packs often cost around $5–10 AUD a day or more, so check your current tariff, as inclusions differ between plans. That sounds manageable for a long weekend, but a three-week trip through Asia or a month in Europe adds up fast.
On many plans, a day's charge can kick in as soon as your phone uses any data, whether you've streamed a film or just checked the footy scores. Skip the pack altogether and casual roaming rates can sting even more. Cruises are their own thing too: well offshore, phones can switch to a maritime network that's billed separately and can be very expensive, Pacific Island cruises included.
How a travel eSIM works
Think of a travel eSIM as a second SIM that lives in your phone's software. HelloSIM eSIMs are data-only: you get mobile data overseas, but no local number and no standard calls or SMS. Your Australian SIM stays where it is, so mates can still call or text your normal number, and WhatsApp carries on under that same number. Ringing Mum from Kyoto? Use FaceTime, WhatsApp, Telegram or Viber over the eSIM's data.
Install it at home on Wi-Fi before you fly, ideally not at the departure gate. Its validity kicks off on its first connection to a network at your destination, so buying a week or two early is fine. Need more data mid-trip? Top up the same eSIM; there's nothing to reinstall.

Popular destinations from Australia
Bali
Bali is the classic Aussie getaway: villas in Seminyak, surf at Uluwatu, yoga in Ubud. Bali is part of Indonesia, so install an Indonesia plan before you go and switch it on when you land in Denpasar; you can book a ride or message your villa straight from the terminal. Heading over to the Gilis or Nusa Penida? Download offline maps first, as coverage can be patchier on the smaller islands and on the boat across.
Japan
Japan has become one of Australia's favourite trips, with the ski season in Niseko and Hakuba lining up nicely with our summer holidays, and cherry blossom season drawing crowds around March and April. You'll rely on data for train connections, translation apps and finding that tiny ramen bar down a laneway. Get a Japan plan sorted at home and it connects once you land in Tokyo or Osaka.

Thailand
Phuket, Koh Samui, Bangkok and Chiang Mai are all an easy flight away, and plenty of Aussies combine a couple of them in one trip. A Thailand plan covers you from the airport to the islands. Download offline maps before ferry transfers to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao, and keep data roaming off on your Australian line while you're on the water.

USA
Hawaii, LA, Vegas and a West Coast road trip are perennial favourites, and after that long-haul flight you want everything working when you land. A USA plan has you sorted for maps, rideshare apps and messages, and because Hawaii is part of the USA, the same plan works there too. Save offline maps before driving through national parks, where signal can drop out for long stretches.
New Zealand
Across the ditch for a ski trip to Queenstown or a campervan loop of the South Island? A New Zealand plan keeps navigation and bookings going. Coverage can drop out on remote mountain passes and in national parks, so download your route before long drives.
Multi-stop Asia and a Euro summer
Plenty of Aussies string several countries together: Singapore to Vietnam to Thailand, or a stopover in Kuala Lumpur on the way to Japan. The Asia Pacific plan covers more than 30 destinations, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and New Zealand, on a single eSIM. It includes Australia as well, so leave the line switched off until you've landed overseas, or it could start counting days while you're still at home. Escaping winter with a Euro summer of Greek islands and Italian coastline instead? The Europe plan covers more than 40 countries, so one eSIM follows you from Mykonos to Amsterdam.
Is your phone ready for eSIM?
If you've got an iPhone XS, XR or anything newer, a Google Pixel 3 or later, or a recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z or one of many A models, you're very likely set. Have a look in Settings for "Add eSIM": on an iPhone it sits under Mobile Service (called Mobile Data on older iOS versions).
Your phone also needs to be unlocked. If it came on a plan from your telco, it may be locked to them, so check with them and ask for an unlock before you go. Picked up your iPhone on a stopover in Hong Kong? Lots of iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao come with two physical SIM slots rather than eSIM, so make sure yours shows the Add eSIM option before you buy a plan.
Before you fly: step by step
- 1Double-check your phone takes eSIM and is unlocked.
- 2Choose your plan: one country, or Asia Pacific or Europe for a multi-stop trip, with the data and days to match.
- 3Check out as a guest with your email. The QR code comes through by email straight away, and you'll also find it in your HelloSIM account and app.
- 4On home Wi-Fi, head to Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM on your iPhone and scan the QR code. Android phones put it under Network & internet or Connections (look for SIMs or SIM manager).
- 5If scanning doesn't work, install manually using the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your email.
- 6Once you're on the ground, flick the HelloSIM line on, choose it under mobile data and give it Data Roaming. You need this setting on, and it costs nothing extra since the data is prepaid.
- 7Switch Data Roaming off on your Australian line so you don't trigger home roaming charges.
How much data to buy
- A beach week in Bali or Phuket, mostly on villa or resort Wi-Fi: around 1 GB.
- Japan or a city trip with maps, transport apps and socials: 3–5 GB a week.
- Three weeks hopping around Asia: roughly 10–15 GB on the Asia Pacific plan, topped up as needed.
- A working holiday, remote work or nightly video calls home: 10 GB or more a week.
- Travelling as a couple or family: one eSIM goes on one phone, so each person needs their own plan.
Paying and getting help
Cards (Visa, Mastercard and American Express), Apple Pay, Google Pay and HelloSIM wallet balance are all accepted. Prices are listed in euros and your bank converts the amount to Australian dollars automatically, so it's worth checking whether your card adds an international transaction fee.
Your QR code arrives by email straight away and is kept in your HelloSIM account and the HelloSIM iPhone app. Got a question? Support is on WhatsApp and email ([email protected]), with emails answered within 24 hours, which is handy when you're a few time zones from home.
