eSIM for Canadian Travellers: Data in the USA, Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe

Daily roaming add-ons add up fast on a long trip. See how Canadians use a travel eSIM for cross-border trips, snowbird winters, Mexico and Dominican Republic getaways, and Europe.

Whether you drive across the border for a weekend, spend the winter in Florida or Arizona, or fly south to a resort in Mexico or the Dominican Republic, your Canadian phone plan was probably not built for long stays outside Canada. Daily roaming add-ons are convenient for a short trip, but they add up quickly over weeks or months. This guide explains how roaming from Canada usually works, how a travel eSIM fits in, and which plan suits each kind of trip.

Roaming from Canada: what it usually costs

Canadian carriers often sell daily roaming add-ons that let you use your plan abroad for a fixed fee per day. These often cost around $12–16 CAD per day or more, and that includes trips to the USA. For a long weekend that may be acceptable, but over a two-week holiday or a winter away the total grows quickly. Check your current tariff before you go, because prices and conditions change.

Bills tend to surprise people for three reasons:

  • The fee is charged per day. A two-week trip means two weeks of charges, and a snowbird winter means months of them.
  • Holiday use is heavier. Maps, ride-hailing apps, photo uploads and video calls with family all use data.
  • Ships and planes are different. On cruise ships and in the air, your phone can connect to maritime or in-flight networks, which can be very expensive. Use airplane mode at sea and switch data back on in port.

How a travel eSIM works

A travel eSIM is a digital SIM that sits alongside your Canadian SIM in the same phone. HelloSIM eSIMs are data-only: they do not come with a local phone number, and regular calls and texts stay on your Canadian line. You can still call and message over WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram or Viber using the eSIM's data, and WhatsApp stays tied to your usual number.

  • Buy online as a guest with just your email address, or with an account, and the QR code is delivered by email straight away.
  • Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you leave.
  • The plan's validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy it.
  • Need more data? Top up the same eSIM from the Check / Top up page, your account or the app, without reinstalling it.

Popular destinations for Canadians

The United States: cross-border trips and snowbird winters

A shopping weekend in Seattle or Buffalo, a family visit in New York or a whole winter in Florida or Arizona: the USA covers every kind of trip. For short visits, a small USA plan is enough for maps and messages. Snowbirds who stay for months can choose a plan with more days and top up the same eSIM whenever they need more data, instead of paying for a roaming add-on every single day. If your winter home has Wi-Fi, you will mostly need mobile data for driving, shopping and outings.

Mexico

Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos are popular winter-sun destinations. Resort Wi-Fi does not come with you on excursions, so an eSIM is useful for taxis, tours and messages back home. Download offline maps before day trips to ruins or cenotes, where the signal can be weaker.

Dominican Republic

Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and Samaná are popular all-inclusive destinations during the Canadian winter. Even if you plan to relax by the pool, mobile data is handy for airport transfers, excursions and keeping in touch with family. If you visit other islands as well, check whether HelloSIM's Caribbean plan fits your route.

Europe

From London and Paris to Lisbon, Rome or Athens, many Canadians combine several countries on one European trip. HelloSIM's Europe plan covers more than 40 countries, including the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Turkey as well as all the big EU destinations, so you can cross borders by train or plane on one eSIM. Check the plan's country list before you buy.

Road trips through the USA and Mexico

If you drive south through the USA and continue into Mexico, the North America plan covers the USA, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Bermuda on one eSIM. Because it also covers Canada, keep the HelloSIM line switched off until you cross the border. That way, its validity starts when you actually need it.

Is your phone ready for eSIM?

Your phone needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Typical eSIM phones are iPhone XS, XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z and many A models. Go to Settings and look for an Add eSIM option.

  • If you bought your phone through a Canadian carrier, make sure it is unlocked. If you are not sure, ask your carrier before you travel.
  • Phones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao, especially iPhones, may have two physical SIM slots instead of eSIM.
  • One eSIM is installed on one phone, so each traveller in your family needs their own.

Before you fly: step by step

  1. 1Check what your Canadian plan charges for roaming at your destination.
  2. 2Confirm that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
  3. 3Choose your plan: USA, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Europe or North America.
  4. 4Pay and get the QR code by email straight away. It is also saved in your HelloSIM account and the app.
  5. 5Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: on iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM; on Android, go to Settings → Network & internet or Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM.
  6. 6When you arrive, switch the HelloSIM line on, set it as the line for cellular data and turn on Data Roaming for it. This is needed, and it costs nothing extra because the data is prepaid.
  7. 7Turn data roaming off on your Canadian line to avoid roaming charges from your carrier.

How much data to buy

  • Cross-border weekend: about 1 GB for maps, messages and a little browsing.
  • One week at a resort in Mexico or the Dominican Republic: 3–5 GB if you post photos and browse regularly.
  • Two weeks in Europe: 6–10 GB for maps, train apps, social media and video calls home.
  • A winter in the USA: around 1 GB a week if you have Wi-Fi at your rental, more if you rely on mobile data every day. Top up as you go.
  • Remote work or daily video calls: 10 GB or more per week.

Paying and getting help

You can pay with Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay or your HelloSIM wallet balance. Prices are charged in euros (EUR), and your card or bank converts them to Canadian dollars automatically; the site can also show prices in US dollars for reference.

Support is available on WhatsApp and by email at [email protected], and emails are answered within 24 hours. Keep the email with your QR code somewhere easy to find, in case you need to reinstall or contact support during your trip.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need my carrier's daily roaming add-on?
Not for data. With a HelloSIM eSIM, your mobile data comes from the prepaid plan, so keep data roaming off on your Canadian line and check your tariff for any charges on calls and texts.
Can I keep my Canadian number?
Yes. The eSIM is data-only, so your Canadian SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts.
Does WhatsApp keep working with my usual number?
Yes. WhatsApp stays tied to your usual number, and calls and messages run over the eSIM's data.
I spend the winter in Florida. Can one eSIM last for months?
Plans differ by data amount and number of days, so choose one that matches your stay. If you need more data, top up the same eSIM without reinstalling it.
Which plan should I choose for a road trip through the USA into Mexico?
The North America plan covers the USA and Mexico on one eSIM. Keep the line switched off until you cross the border, because the plan also covers Canada.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
It needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Look for an Add eSIM option in Settings, and ask your carrier to unlock the phone if needed.
