El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America, which means a single week can take in Pacific surf breaks, a volcano summit and the colonial villages of the Ruta de las Flores. International flights land at El Salvador International Airport (SAL), on the coastal plain south-east of San Salvador and within easy reach of the beaches. A HelloSIM eSIM puts mobile data on your phone before you take off.
Why use an eSIM in El Salvador
- Directions from touchdown: open maps or a ride-hailing app for the drive to the capital or straight to the surf coast.
- Three local networks: HelloSIM connects you to Tigo, Movistar and Digicel 4G, so you are not tied to a single provider.
- Keep your number: your home SIM stays in the phone, and WhatsApp works exactly as it does at home.
- Avoid roaming fees: home carriers often charge premium daily rates in Central America — check your current tariff before you go.
- Top up when needed: add data to the same eSIM from your account or the HelloSIM app.
Because HelloSIM eSIMs are data-only, you make calls and send messages through apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram or FaceTime. The QR code is emailed to you straight away, and validity begins only when the eSIM first connects to a network in El Salvador.

Networks and coverage
In El Salvador, HelloSIM uses Tigo, Movistar and Digicel, all on 4G. Coverage is solid across Greater San Salvador, in Santa Ana, San Miguel and Sonsonate, along the coastal road through La Libertad and the surf towns of El Tunco, El Sunzal and El Zonte, and in the Ruta de las Flores villages of Juayúa, Apaneca and Concepción de Ataco.
Signal is less reliable on the upper slopes of the Santa Ana volcano and around Cerro Verde, inside El Imposible National Park, in the rural mountains of Chalatenango and Morazán, and on the islands of the Gulf of Fonseca. Quiet stretches of the eastern coastline can also have gaps.
How to get connected
- 1Complete your purchase and look for the QR code in your email; it is saved in your HelloSIM account and app as well.
- 2On Wi-Fi before you travel, add the eSIM: iPhone users go to Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM, while Android users open Settings → Network & internet or Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM.
- 3On arrival at SAL, activate the HelloSIM line, make it your mobile data line and turn on Data Roaming for that line; the data is prepaid, so there is no extra charge.
- 4Keep data roaming switched off on your home line to stop your usual carrier from billing you.
How much data do you need
- Light (about 1 GB a week): maps, messaging and checking surf or bus times.
- Medium (3–5 GB a week): social media, browsing, ride-hailing and sharing photos from the volcano rim.
- Heavy (10 GB or more): video calls, streaming or remote work from a beach town.
Hostels, cafés and hotels along the coast usually have Wi-Fi, but it varies a lot, so treat your eSIM as the reliable option.

Travel tips for staying connected in El Salvador
- Download offline maps of the western highlands before hiking the Santa Ana volcano from Cerro Verde, as signal can drop on the trail.
- Surfers moving between El Tunco, El Zonte and other breaks will find coverage along the coastal road, but a phone pouch keeps the device safe from sand and spray.
- On boat trips around the Gulf of Fonseca, send messages and save tickets before you leave the mainland, because coverage fades on the water.
- If you plan to use ride-hailing apps in San Salvador, keep mobile data on so your driver can reach you through the app.
