The Faroe Islands are a self-governing archipelago within the Kingdom of Denmark, set in the North Atlantic between Iceland, Norway and Scotland. Most visitors land at Vágar Airport, linked to the capital Tórshavn by road and an undersea tunnel, while others arrive on the car ferry from Denmark. With a HelloSIM eSIM installed before you leave, your maps and weather apps work from your very first drive.
Why use an eSIM in the Faroe Islands
- It is ready before departure, with nothing to sort out at a small airport after you land.
- Navigation for road trips through tunnels, along fjords and over mountain roads.
- Live weather checks, essential on islands where fog and wind can roll in quickly.
- Calls and texts still reach your own SIM, and WhatsApp keeps your usual number.
- Prepaid data with no roaming bill afterwards. The Faroes are not part of the EU, so many European tariffs leave them out of their roaming allowance; check yours before you go.
Travel here is all about the outdoors: cliff walks, waterfalls, boat trips and drives between tiny villages. The weather shapes every day, so being able to check forecasts, ferry times and hiking conditions on the spot makes a real difference to what you can fit in.

Networks and coverage
The HelloSIM eSIM for the Faroe Islands connects to Føroya Tele and Hey (formerly Vodafone), with 5G where available and supported by your phone, and 4G/LTE elsewhere. Coverage is strongest in Tórshavn, Klaksvík, Runavík and the other larger towns, and along the main roads linking Streymoy, Eysturoy, Vágar and Borðoy.
Signal can be patchy in narrow valleys, beneath high cliffs, on remote hiking routes and on the smaller outer islands. Expect it to fade at sea too, for example on boat trips to the bird cliffs, and for much of the long ferry crossing to and from Denmark.
How to get connected
- 1Your QR code arrives by email straight after payment and is also kept in your HelloSIM account and the app.
- 2Install it at home over Wi-Fi. iPhone: Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM. Android: Settings → Network & internet or Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM; menu names vary by brand.
- 3After landing on Vágar, turn the HelloSIM line on, make it your data line and enable Data Roaming for it. Turn data roaming off on your home SIM.
- 4Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a Faroese network. Top up the same eSIM whenever you need more data.
How much data do you need
- Light (around 1 GB a week): maps, weather apps and messaging.
- Medium (3–5 GB a week): sharing photos of waterfalls and cliffs, browsing and social media.
- Heavy (10 GB or more): video calls, streaming on rainy evenings, or remote work.
Guesthouses and hotels usually have Wi-Fi, but out on the islands you will be on mobile data for most of the day.
Good to know
- Currency: Faroese króna, at par with the Danish krone; Danish notes and coins are accepted too.
- Capital: Tórshavn.
- Languages: Faroese; Danish is widely understood and many people speak English.
- Time zone: UTC+0, or UTC+1 in summer.
- Plug type: Type C and K, as in Denmark.
- Don't miss: the Múlafossur waterfall at Gásadalur, the lake Sørvágsvatn perched above the sea cliffs, and the turf-roofed old quarter of Tinganes in Tórshavn.
Travel tips for staying connected in the Faroe Islands
- Download offline maps of all the islands before you go; hiking routes and some coastal roads run through areas without signal.
- Check the forecast before every drive and hike, because low cloud and fog can hide mountain roads and trails.
- On the ferry from Denmark, keep data roaming off on your home line: ships often use maritime networks that are billed separately and can be expensive.
- Book boat trips and helicopter rides to outer islands such as Mykines in advance, and save the confirmations offline in case the signal is weak once you are there.
- Your Faroe Islands plan covers the Faroes only, and they are not included in the Europe plan, so if you stop in Denmark or Iceland on the way, buy a separate plan for that country.
