When to go
The Dominican Republic is a year-round Caribbean destination, but the dry season from December to April is the classic sweet spot. Expect warm days around 28-31C, low humidity, and reliable sunshine in Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, and Santo Domingo.
Peak season (December-April)
This is high season, and prices in Punta Cana and Bavaro climb sharply around Christmas, New Year, and Easter (Semana Santa). Book all-inclusive resorts and flights two to three months ahead. The reward: the calmest seas, best beach weather, and almost no rain.
Shoulder season (May-June and November)
These months offer the best value. Crowds thin out, resort rates drop noticeably, and the weather is still excellent apart from brief afternoon showers. November in particular is a quiet, affordable gem before the December rush.
Low season and hurricanes (August-October)
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, peaking in September and October. Direct hits are uncommon but storms and heavy rain are possible. Upsides: the lowest prices of the year and lush, green landscapes. Travel insurance is wise.
Whale season
From mid-January to mid-March, thousands of humpback whales gather in Samana Bay to breed. Whale-watching tours from Samana town are a world-class wildlife experience and a top reason to visit in winter.

- February - Carnival across the country every Sunday, peaking on the 27th for Independence Day; La Vega has the most famous celebrations
- February-March - Santo Domingo Carnival parade on the Malecon
- March - Semana Santa (Holy Week), a major holiday with full beaches
- July - Santo Domingo Merengue Festival, the city's biggest music event
- October - Puerto Plata Merengue and Caribbean Rhythms Festival
- November - Punta Cana film and jazz events, plus great diving conditions
