When to go
Azerbaijan packs nine of the world's climate zones into one country, so timing depends on whether you want Baku's seaside warmth, the green Caucasus mountains, or the semi-desert of Gobustan. Broadly, spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are the sweet spots: mild, dry and uncrowded.
Spring (April-June)
This is arguably the best season. Baku sits around 18-25C, hillsides near Quba and Lahij turn green, and rain is moderate. The country celebrates Novruz in late March, its biggest holiday, with bonfires, tightrope walkers and sweets like shekerbura and pakhlava. Late spring is ideal for hiking Gabala and the Shahdag foothills.
Summer (July-August)
Peak heat and peak crowds. Baku and the lowlands hit 35-40C and humidity off the Caspian makes it feel hotter. Locals escape to the mountains: Gabala, Quba and Lahij stay pleasant at 22-28C. It is high season on the Caspian beaches around Nardaran and Bilgah, so expect higher hotel prices. Book the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix (usually September now, but check) well ahead.
Autumn (September-October)
A second sweet spot. The heat breaks, Baku returns to a comfortable 20-27C, and the wine regions around Ganja and Shamakhi harvest grapes. Pomegranate season peaks in October-November, celebrated at the Goychay Pomegranate Festival with tastings and folk music. Light crowds and softer prices make it great value.
Winter (November-March)
Baku is cool, windy and grey (5-10C), but two things shine: low city prices and ski season. Shahdag and Tufandag resorts near Quba and Gabala open roughly December-March with reliable snow and modern lifts. New Year in Baku is festive and bright.
