How much does Bahrain cost?
Bahrain is one of the more affordable Gulf states, but prices swing widely depending on whether you eat local or splurge in Manama's hotels. The currency is the Bahraini dinar (BHD), one of the world's strongest, pegged at roughly 1 BHD = 2.65 USD. Cash is useful in souqs, but cards work almost everywhere.
Daily budgets
- Budget traveller: 18-30 BHD/day. A bed in a budget hotel or hostel, machboos or shawarma meals, and buses.
- Mid-range: 45-80 BHD/day. A 3-star hotel, mix of cafes and restaurants, the odd taxi and an attraction or two.
- Comfort/luxury: 120 BHD+/day. Four- and five-star resorts in Seef or Amwaj, fine dining, and private tours.
Sample prices
- Shawarma wrap: 0.6-1 BHD
- Local meal (machboos, rice and chicken): 2-4 BHD
- Restaurant main in Adliya: 6-12 BHD
- Coffee at a cafe: 1.5-2.5 BHD
- 1.5L bottled water: 0.2 BHD
- Bus ticket (Bahrain Public Transport): 0.3-0.5 BHD
- Short taxi ride: 2-4 BHD
- Entry to Bahrain National Museum: 1 BHD
- Bahrain Fort (Qal'at al-Bahrain): free site, small museum fee
Money and cards
Visa and Mastercard are accepted in malls, restaurants and most shops; Amex less so. ATMs are everywhere and reliable. Notify your bank to avoid blocks, and check foreign-transaction fees. Tipping is not mandatory but 10 percent is appreciated in restaurants that do not add a service charge. Keep small dinar notes and fils coins for buses and souq stalls.
Saving tips
- Eat where locals do: cafeterias and Indian or Bahraini canteens are a fraction of hotel prices.
- Use the air-conditioned public buses instead of taxis for longer hops.
- Visit free sights: the Tree of Life, Bahrain Fort grounds, the Manama and Muharraq souqs, and corniche walks.
- Travel in the cooler months (November to March) but book ahead around the Bahrain Grand Prix when rooms spike.
- Buy a local eSIM rather than paying roaming for maps and ride apps.
- Refill water and carry it; the heat makes constant bottled buying add up.
