Belize packs a barrier reef, rainforest and ancient Mayan cities into one compact, English-speaking country, and your phone is what ties the trip together: water-taxi times, tour pick-ups, directions to the ruins. Most visitors fly into Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport near Belize City, while others arrive by cruise tender or overland from Mexico or Guatemala. With a HelloSIM eSIM, your data plan is on the phone before you even pack.
Why use an eSIM in Belize
- Sorted for the onward hop: check the water taxi to Caye Caulker or San Pedro and message your guesthouse straight from the airport.
- No swapping SIM cards: your home SIM stays in place for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps your usual number.
- Roaming kept in check: home-carrier roaming in Central America is often outside standard bundles and can add up fast — check your tariff before you travel.
- Easy to extend: staying longer on the cayes? Add data to the same eSIM from your HelloSIM account or the app.
A HelloSIM eSIM is data-only, with no local number, so you call and chat through WhatsApp, FaceTime or Viber instead. The QR code is delivered by email straight away, and the validity period only begins once the eSIM first connects to a network in Belize.

Networks and coverage
In Belize your eSIM runs on DigiCell, the mobile network of Belize Telemedia, using 4G. Expect reliable coverage in Belize City, Belmopan, San Ignacio, Orange Walk and Corozal, and on the two most popular islands, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. Beach villages in the south such as Placencia and Hopkins are generally well served too.
The interior is another story. Signal becomes patchy or disappears on the dirt roads through Mountain Pine Ridge to Caracol, deep inside Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, on the smaller outer cayes and atolls, and out on the reef — including the long boat ride to the Great Blue Hole.
How to get connected
- 1Once you have paid, find the QR code in your inbox; a copy is kept in your HelloSIM account and app.
- 2Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: on an iPhone tap Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM; on Android go to Settings → Connections or Network & internet → SIM manager → Add eSIM.
- 3When you land in Belize, turn the HelloSIM line on, set it as your line for mobile data and switch on Data Roaming for that line — it is prepaid, so this costs nothing extra.
- 4Make sure data roaming is off on your home line, so your own carrier cannot add charges.
How much data do you need
- Light (around 1 GB a week): maps, water-taxi timetables, booking tours and messaging.
- Medium (3–5 GB a week): sharing reef and ruin photos, browsing and regular social media.
- Heavy (10 GB or more): video calls, evening streaming or working remotely from a beach cabana.
Guesthouses, resorts and dive shops usually have Wi-Fi, although island connections can crawl when every guest goes online at sunset.
Good to know
- Currency: Belize dollar (BZD), fixed at two to one against the US dollar, which is widely accepted
- Capital: Belmopan; Belize City is the largest city and the main transport hub
- Languages: English is official; Spanish, Belizean Kriol and Garifuna are widely spoken
- Time zone: UTC−6 all year
- Plug type: mostly A and B (North American style)
- Don't miss: snorkelling in Hol Chan Marine Reserve, the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich and Caracol, and a lazy day on Caye Caulker
Travel tips for staying connected in Belize
- Download offline maps of Cayo District before leaving San Ignacio, because the road to Caracol has long stretches without any signal.
- On reef, snorkelling and Blue Hole trips, coverage fades once you are out on the water, so confirm pick-up details before you board.
- Cruise passengers should keep flight mode on at sea: phones can latch onto the ship's maritime network, which is billed separately and is often expensive. Use your eSIM once you are ashore.
- Many cave and jungle tours take you well beyond any mast, so tell someone your plans and carry the phone in a waterproof bag.
- Your Belize plan works in Belize only, so think ahead if your route crosses a border.
