International flights to Benin arrive at Cotonou's Cadjehoun airport, close to the city centre, and plenty of travellers also come overland from Lomé in Togo or Lagos in Nigeria. Install a HelloSIM eSIM before your journey and your phone connects to a Beninese network once you are in the country.
Why use an eSIM in Benin
- Message your driver or hotel from the airport and share your location without first finding a phone kiosk.
- Get around Cotonou by zemidjan motorbike taxi with your destination pinned on a map to show the driver.
- Plan day trips along the coast to Ouidah and Grand-Popo, or inland to Abomey, with bookings and directions on your phone.
- Home-carrier roaming in West Africa often carries a daily fee or costly data packs — check the terms of your current plan before you leave.
- Your regular SIM stays in place for calls and texts, WhatsApp keeps your usual number, and the plan's validity begins only when the eSIM connects in Benin.
Benin is long and narrow, stretching from the Atlantic coast up to the Niger River, so one trip can take you from lagoon villages and Vodun shrines in the south to savannah parks in the north. Your own data keeps directions, translations and bookings working along the whole route.

Networks and coverage
Benin's HelloSIM eSIM can use two networks: MTN, with 5G where MTN offers it and your phone supports it and 4G elsewhere, and Celtiis on 4G.
Coverage is usually strongest in Cotonou, Porto-Novo and Abomey-Calavi, along the coast road towards Ouidah, and in larger towns such as Bohicon and Parakou.
Signal becomes less dependable on rural roads through the centre and north, in smaller villages away from the main highways, and in the national parks of the far north such as Pendjari, where you should be ready for little or no coverage.
How to get connected
- 1Check that your phone takes an eSIM and is unlocked, then pick the Benin plan; your QR code is emailed the moment payment goes through and is saved in your HelloSIM account.
- 2Add the eSIM while you are still at home on Wi-Fi — Settings → Mobile → Add eSIM on iPhone, or Settings → Connections / Network & internet → SIM manager → Add eSIM on Android, depending on the brand.
- 3When you arrive in Cotonou or cross the border, turn on the HelloSIM line, set it for mobile data and allow Data Roaming on that line only; it is needed to connect and adds no cost, since the data is already paid for.
- 4Keep data roaming switched off on your home line, so your regular carrier cannot add charges.
How much data do you need
- Light — WhatsApp, maps and ride directions: roughly 1 GB a week.
- Medium — sharing photos from Ouidah and Ganvié, social media and browsing: 3–5 GB a week.
- Heavy — video calls, streaming or working on the road: 10 GB or more a week.
Many hotels and some cafés in Cotonou offer Wi-Fi, though quality varies a lot, and it is less common in smaller towns and the north.
Good to know
- Currency: West African CFA franc (XOF)
- Capital: Porto-Novo; Cotonou is the largest city and the seat of government
- Languages: French (official), with Fon, Yoruba and other local languages widely spoken
- Time zone: UTC+1, with no daylight saving
- Plug type: C and E, 220 V
- Don't miss: the stilt village of Ganvié on Lake Nokoué, the Route des Esclaves to the Door of No Return in Ouidah, and the royal palaces of Abomey
Travel tips for staying connected in Benin
- Before driving north to Pendjari, download offline maps and save your lodge's details, as the park and the roads leading to it can be out of range.
- Keep your accommodation address in a note or a WhatsApp message to show zemidjan drivers, who often navigate by landmarks rather than street names.
- French is the language of signs and most conversations with visitors, so add an offline French pack to your translation app for spots with weak signal.
- Charge a power bank before long days out, such as a pirogue trip to Ganvié or the drive to the palaces of Abomey, when maps and the camera drain your battery.
- Need more data part-way through? Top up the same eSIM from the HelloSIM app or website instead of buying a new one.
If Benin is one stop on a longer West African itinerary, an Africa regional plan can cover several countries on one eSIM — make sure every country on your route is included.
