A warm, communal culture

Kenya is home to more than 40 ethnic communities, from the Kikuyu and Luo to the Maasai and Swahili coast. Hospitality runs deep, and the national spirit of harambee ("pulling together") shapes daily life. A little cultural awareness goes a long way from Nairobi to the coast.

Greetings matter

Greetings are never rushed. People often ask about your health, family and journey before any business.

• The universal greeting is Jambo or, more naturally, Habari? ("How are you?"), answered with Mzuri ("good").
• Shake hands with everyone present; a gentle, lingering handshake is normal.
• Use the right hand to give, receive and shake. The left is considered unclean.
• Address elders with respect, often as Mzee (elder) or Mama.

Social etiquette

• Dress modestly, especially in rural areas and on the largely Muslim coast (Mombasa, Lamu). Cover shoulders and knees at mosques and churches.
• Always ask before photographing people, particularly Maasai or Samburu, who may request a small fee.
• Public displays of affection are frowned upon. Homosexuality remains criminalized, so discretion is advised.
• Time is flexible. "Kenyan time" means meetings may start late, so stay patient.

Dos and don'ts

• Do accept tea (chai) or food when offered; refusing can offend.
• Do remove shoes when entering many homes.
• Don't point with a single finger; gesture with your whole hand.
• Don't discuss tribal politics casually; it is a sensitive subject.
• Don't take photos of government buildings, airports or the president's portrait.

Tipping norms

Tipping is appreciated but not rigidly expected.

• Restaurants: 5 to 10 percent if no service charge is added.
• Safari guides: roughly 10 USD per guest per day; safari cooks and camp staff a little less.
• Hotel porters: 50 to 100 Kenyan shillings per bag.
• Taxis: round up the fare.

The local currency is the Kenyan shilling (KES); carry small notes for tips and markets, where polite bargaining is expected.
