A quiet, deeply rooted culture
Latvians can seem reserved at first, but this calm exterior hides a warm, loyal people with one of Europe's strongest folk traditions. Latvia is a small Baltic nation of under two million, and its identity is built on nature, song and a hard-won independence regained in 1991.
Greetings and first impressions
- A firm handshake with direct eye contact is the standard greeting, for both men and women.
- Use Labdien (good day) or a simple Sveiki (hello) when meeting people.
- Latvians value personal space and quiet voices in public. Loud conversation on trams or in cafes is frowned upon.
- Address older people and officials with their surname until invited to use first names.
Traditions worth knowing
The Song and Dance Festival (Dziesmu un deju svetki), held every five years in Riga, gathers tens of thousands of singers and is recognised by UNESCO. It is central to national pride.
Jani, the midsummer solstice on 23-24 June, is the biggest celebration of the year. People wear oak-leaf and flower crowns, jump over bonfires, eat caraway cheese (Janu siers) and drink beer until sunrise. If invited, bring something to share.
Latvians have a deep bond with the forest. Mushroom and berry picking is a national pastime, and many families have a rural homestead they return to.
Dos and donts
- Do remove your shoes when entering someone's home; slippers are often offered.
- Do bring an odd number of flowers as a gift, never even (even numbers are for funerals).
- Do try local foods like grey peas with bacon, rye bread and Riga Black Balsam, a herbal liqueur.
- Dont confuse Latvia with Russia or lump the three Baltic states together; national identity matters here.
- Dont be overly loud, boastful or pushy; modesty is respected.
- Dont expect instant small talk; trust builds slowly.
Tipping norms
Tipping is appreciated but modest. In restaurants, rounding up or leaving 5-10% is normal for good service; check whether a service charge is already added. Leave a euro or two for taxis and a small tip for hotel staff. Tipping is not expected in casual cafes or for counter service.
