Why Ghana?

Plugs and voltage

Connectivity

Mobile data is cheap and widely available on MTN, Telecel and AT. Coverage is strong in Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast and patchier in rural areas. A local plan or eSIM is far cheaper than roaming.

Quick tips

• Carry cash. The cedi (GHS) is king at markets, tro-tros and small eateries; cards work mainly in hotels and malls.
• Use ride apps. Bolt and Uber operate in Accra and Kumasi and save you haggling.
• Negotiate taxis before getting in if there is no meter.
• Drink bottled or sachet water, not tap water.
• Greet people first. A handshake and hello before business is good manners.
• Dress modestly at religious sites and in smaller towns.
• Try the food: jollof rice, banku with tilapia, waakye and fresh kelewele.
• Beat the traffic in Accra by travelling early; jams are serious.
