When to go to France
France rewards travelers in every season, but the right time depends on whether you want beaches, vineyards, snow or city culture without the crowds.
Spring (April-June)
Spring is arguably the best time to visit. Paris parks bloom, temperatures sit at a comfortable 15-22C, and the summer crowds have not arrived. The French Riviera warms up and Provence turns green.
- Cannes Film Festival in mid-May brings glamour to the Riviera
- Roland-Garros, the French Open, takes over Paris in late May
- Lavender begins blooming in late June around Valensole
Summer (July-August)
This is peak season: hot, lively and expensive. Expect 25-35C, packed beaches and busy museums. Many Parisians leave the city in August, so some restaurants close.
- Bastille Day on 14 July means fireworks and parades nationwide
- Tour de France crosses the country through July
- Avignon Theatre Festival fills the south with performance
- Lavender fields near Valensole are at their purple best
Autumn (September-October)
A fantastic shoulder season. The weather stays mild, prices drop, and the wine regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Alsace celebrate the vendange, or grape harvest.
- Wine harvest festivals across Burgundy and Bordeaux
- Fewer crowds at the Louvre, Versailles and Mont-Saint-Michel
- Golden vineyards make Alsace especially photogenic
Winter (November-March)
Winter splits in two. The Alps deliver world-class skiing in resorts like Chamonix and Val d'Isere, while cities glow with Christmas markets.
- Strasbourg Christmas Market, one of Europe's oldest, runs through December
- Ski season runs roughly December to April
- Paris is quiet, cheaper and atmospheric in the cold months
Quick verdict
For the best balance of weather, value and light crowds, aim for May, June, September or early October. Choose July-August only if you want the beach buzz, and winter if you ski or love Christmas markets.
