Why Finland surprises first-timers
Finland is calm, clean and famously punctual. Buses leave on time, tap water is among the best in the world, and locals value quiet personal space. Knowing a few basics makes your first trip smooth from the moment you land at Helsinki-Vantaa airport.
Plugs and voltage
Finland uses the standard European Type C and Type F plugs (two round pins), the same as Germany and most of mainland Europe.

Language basics
Finnish is the main language, with Swedish as the second official language. English is widely spoken, especially by younger people and in cities, so you will rarely be stuck.

Packing for the weather
Finland's weather swings hard by season.
- Summer (Jun-Aug): mild, long daylight, pack layers and a light rain jacket; mosquito repellent is essential near lakes and in Lapland
- Winter (Nov-Mar): can drop below -20C in the north; bring thermal base layers, an insulated coat, gloves, a hat and grippy waterproof boots
- A swimsuit is worth packing year-round for the sauna and lake or sea dips
Connectivity
Finland has excellent mobile coverage and free Wi-Fi in most cafes, hotels and libraries. The famous Oodi central library in Helsinki is a great free spot. For maps, ferry and train bookings, and translation, mobile data is the most reliable option, especially out in the countryside.
