Most flights land at Douglas–Charles Airport on Dominica's north-east coast, a winding drive over the mountains from Roseau, while ferries from Guadeloupe and Martinique and many cruise ships arrive in the capital itself. Put a HelloSIM eSIM on your phone before you travel and it connects to the local network once you reach the island.
This guide covers Dominica, the island between Guadeloupe and Martinique, not the Dominican Republic, which is a separate destination.
Why use an eSIM in Dominica
- The road from Douglas–Charles to Roseau crosses the island's mountainous interior, and live maps plus a quick message to your host make the arrival easier.
- Before hiking to Boiling Lake or a section of the Waitukubuli National Trail, you can check the weather and share your plans with someone.
- Booking whale watching, river tubing or a snorkel at Champagne Reef is simpler when you can message operators directly.
- Your home SIM stays in place for calls and texts, and WhatsApp still uses your usual number.
- Roaming on a home plan frequently comes with a daily charge, so review your current tariff before you leave.
Dominica is steep, green and volcanic, with much of its interior under rainforest and Morne Trois Pitons National Park listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Days here tend to revolve around waterfalls, hot springs and trails, and a data line of your own helps you plan around rain showers and slow mountain roads.

Networks and coverage
On the island, your HelloSIM eSIM uses the 4G network of Flow (Cable & Wireless), meaning a 4G/LTE connection rather than 5G.
Coverage is usually good in Roseau and along the populated west coast up to Portsmouth, as well as in the larger villages.
The mountains are the main obstacle. Deep valleys, rainforest trails in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, the route to Boiling Lake and remote sections of the Waitukubuli National Trail can have weak or no signal, and the same goes for quieter stretches of the east coast.
How to get connected
- 1Check your phone supports eSIM and isn't locked to a carrier, then buy the Dominica plan. You'll get the QR code by email straight away, and a copy stays in your HelloSIM account.
- 2Install it on Wi-Fi before leaving home. On iPhone that's Settings → Mobile → Add eSIM; on Android it's Settings → Network & internet or Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM, depending on the brand.
- 3In Dominica, turn the HelloSIM line on, set it as the line for mobile data and switch Data Roaming on for it. The eSIM won't connect without this, and it doesn't cost extra because the data is prepaid.
- 4Switch off data roaming on your home line so it can't run up roaming charges with your own carrier.
How much data do you need
- Light — navigation, messaging and weather checks: about 1 GB a week.
- Medium — sharing waterfall photos, social media and browsing: 3–5 GB a week.
- Heavy — streaming shows in the evening, video calls or working online: 10 GB or more a week.
Guesthouses and eco-lodges often have Wi-Fi, though up in the hills it can be slow or drop out, so don't plan important calls around it.

Travel tips for staying connected in Dominica
- Download offline maps of the interior and your chosen trail before setting off, as signal often disappears in the valleys and forest.
- On river and gorge outings such as Titou Gorge, keep your phone in a waterproof pouch, because rain and spray are part of the experience.
- Navigating all day drains a battery fast on long hikes, so carry a power bank.
- Crossing by ferry from Guadeloupe or Martinique? Keep data roaming off on your home line, since it may pick up French networks on the way and your carrier could charge for that.
- Visiting on a cruise? Once the ship is at sea, its maritime network may take over your phone's connection and your home carrier bills that usage, so leave roaming off on your home line until you're in port.
Dominica's own plan keeps you online from the airport to the trailhead.
