When to go to Cyprus
Cyprus enjoys one of the sunniest climates in the Mediterranean, with around 320–340 days of sunshine a year. That means there is no truly bad time to visit, but each season offers something different. Your choice depends on whether you want hot beach days, warm hiking weather, or quieter prices.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is arguably the best all-round season. Temperatures sit between 18°C and 27°C, wildflowers blanket the Akamas Peninsula, and the sea begins to warm by late May. It is ideal for hiking the Troodos trails or exploring Paphos and Kourion without summer heat. Greek Orthodox Easter is the biggest cultural event, with candlelit midnight services and village feasts. The Limassol Anthestiria (Flower Festival) in May fills the seafront with floral floats.
Summer (June to August): peak season
This is the hottest and busiest period, with coastal highs of 32–36°C and inland Nicosia often above 40°C. Beaches in Ayia Napa, Protaras and Coral Bay are at their liveliest, and the sea is a warm 26–28°C. Expect peak prices and crowds, so book hotels and car hire early. Highlights include the Larnaca Summer Festival and the buzzing nightlife strip of Ayia Napa.
Autumn (September to November)
Shoulder season is a sweet spot. September still delivers swimmable seas and 30°C days, but crowds thin and prices ease. October is gloriously mild for sightseeing and wine country tours. The Limassol Wine Festival in late August or early September celebrates the island's commandaria heritage, while harvest season brings excellent local food.
Winter (December to February)
Coastal winters are mild at 15–18°C, perfect for city breaks in Nicosia or coastal walks. Surprisingly, the Troodos Mountains get enough snow for skiing on Mount Olympus, usually January to March. Christmas and Epiphany (6 January) bring seaside cross-diving ceremonies, and prices are at their lowest.
Quick verdict
- Best overall: April to June and September to October
- Best for beaches and nightlife: July and August
- Best for budget and quiet: November to February
- Best for skiing and snow: January to February
