How safe is the Czech Republic?
The Czech Republic is one of the safest countries in Europe. Violent crime is rare, and Prague, Brno, and Cesky Krumlov are comfortable to explore day and night. The main risks for travelers are pickpocketing and tourist-targeted scams, not personal danger.
Common scams to watch for
- Taxi overcharging. Avoid hailing taxis on the street near Wenceslas Square or the airport. Use Bolt or Uber, or call a reputable firm like AAA Radiotaxi. Insist on the meter.
- Currency exchange rip-offs. Street kiosks advertising "0% commission" often give terrible rates. Czechia uses the koruna (CZK), not the euro. Withdraw from bank ATMs and decline the "convert to your currency" option.
- Inflated bar bills. In some Old Town clubs, hostesses lure tourists in and a small drink costs a fortune. Check prices before ordering.
- Fake police. Genuine officers will not demand to inspect your wallet or cash on the street. Ask for ID and never hand over money.
- Petition and bracelet distractions. People with clipboards or "gifts" often work with pickpockets.
Where to be careful
Pickpockets operate on tram 22 and the metro line near tourist sights, on Charles Bridge, in Old Town Square, and at crowded Christmas markets. Keep your bag zipped and in front of you, and never leave a phone on a restaurant table.
After dark, the area around the main train station (Hlavni nadrazi) and parts of Wenceslas Square attract aggressive touts and overpriced strip clubs. Stay alert but not afraid.
Practical safety tips
- Tap water is safe to drink everywhere.
- Validate tram and metro tickets in the yellow machines; plain-clothes inspectors issue on-the-spot fines.
- Carry some cash; many pubs and bakeries are card-friendly but not all.
- Drink responsibly: Czech beer is strong and cheap, and intoxication makes you a target.
Emergency numbers
- 112 - general European emergency line (English spoken)
- 155 - ambulance
- 158 - police
- 150 - fire brigade
EU citizens can use an EHIC card for healthcare; everyone else should carry travel insurance.
