Best Time to Visit China: Seasons, Weather & Festivals

China is vast, so timing depends on where you go. Here's how the seasons, peak crowds, and festivals line up across the country.

When to go

China spans five climate zones, so there is no single best month. Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the sweet spots almost everywhere: mild temperatures, clear skies, and manageable crowds outside the public holidays.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is ideal for Beijing, Xi'an, and the Yangtze region. Cherry and plum blossoms peak in late March around Wuhan and Nanjing. Days are warm and dry, though April can bring occasional dust in the north.

  • Great for the Great Wall, Forbidden City, and Guilin's karst hills
  • Avoid the Qingming holiday (early April) when domestic travel surges

Summer (June to August)

Summer is hot and humid almost everywhere, with the rainy season (the meiyu front) drenching the Yangtze valley in June and July. It is the right time only for high-altitude regions: Tibet, Yunnan's Shangri-La, and the grasslands of Inner Mongolia stay cool and green.

  • Expect 35C and crowds in Shanghai, Beijing, and Chengdu
  • School holidays make July and August the most expensive season

Autumn (September to November)

Many travelers call autumn the best time overall. Skies are crisp, humidity drops, and the Great Wall and Jiuzhaigou's lakes glow with color in October.

  • Beijing and Xi'an are at their most comfortable
  • Avoid the first week of October: the National Day Golden Week is the busiest travel period of the year, with packed trains and peak prices

Winter (December to February)

The north turns bitterly cold; Harbin's Ice and Snow Festival (January to February) draws crowds with vast illuminated ice sculptures. The south stays milder, and Lunar New Year brings festive temple fairs but also the world's largest annual migration, so book early or avoid.

  • Harbin and Jilin for ski resorts and ice art
  • Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Hainan island for warmth

Festivals worth planning around

  • Spring Festival / Lunar New Year (late January or February): fireworks and red lanterns, but transport chaos
  • Lantern Festival (15 days after New Year): glowing displays nationwide
  • Dragon Boat Festival (June): boat races and sticky rice dumplings
  • Mid-Autumn Festival (September or October): mooncakes and lantern walks
