Canada eSIM: Mobile Data for Your Trip, Coast to Coast

Get mobile data in Canada on Bell, Rogers, Telus and other local 5G networks. Install your HelloSIM eSIM before you fly, connect on arrival and keep your own number.

Whether you land at Toronto Pearson, Vancouver International or Montréal-Trudeau, a HelloSIM eSIM connects to a Canadian network once you arrive. You install it at home, so by the time you reach the arrivals hall you can book a ride, check in with your hotel and tell family you have landed.

Why use an eSIM in Canada

  • Roaming with your home carrier often comes with a daily charge that adds up quickly on a two-week trip — check your current tariff before you go.
  • There is no SIM shop to find after a long-haul flight: the QR code is delivered by email straight away after payment.
  • Your own SIM stays in the phone, so your number and WhatsApp work exactly as they do at home.
  • Validity starts when the eSIM first connects in Canada, not on the day you buy it, so you can sort it out weeks ahead.
  • Canada is vast, and many trips mix a city break with long drives where live maps, fuel stops and weather updates really matter.

A typical itinerary pairs Toronto with Niagara Falls, or Vancouver with a week in the Rockies. Your own data line keeps navigation, bookings and messaging working between hotels, campsites and cafés.

Networks and coverage

HelloSIM's Canada plan uses the local partner networks Bell, Rogers, Telus, Freedom Mobile, SaskTel and Eastlink, with 5G where these networks offer it and your phone supports it, and 4G/LTE everywhere else.

Coverage is strongest in and around the big cities — Toronto, Montréal, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa and Quebec City — and along the main highway corridors of the populated south. Most Canadians live in a fairly narrow band close to the US border, and that is where the networks are densest.

Once you leave that band, expect gaps: mountain passes in the Rockies, long highway stretches between small towns, the interior of large national parks and the far north can all have sections with no signal at all.

How to get connected

  1. 1Confirm your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked, then buy the Canada plan; the QR code is emailed straight away.
  2. 2While you are still at home on Wi-Fi, go to Settings → Mobile (or Cellular) → Add eSIM on an iPhone, or Settings → Network & internet / Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM on Android, and scan the code.
  3. 3After landing, switch the HelloSIM line on, make it your line for mobile data and turn on Data Roaming for that line. It costs nothing extra because the data is prepaid.
  4. 4Turn data roaming off on your home line so it cannot run up charges, and keep it active only if you want to receive calls and texts.

How much data do you need

  • Light use — maps, messaging and checking opening times: about 1 GB a week.
  • Regular use — social media, browsing and streaming a playlist on road trips: 3–5 GB a week.
  • Heavy use — video calls, uploading lots of photos or working remotely: 10 GB or more a week.

Free Wi-Fi is common in Canadian hotels and cafés, so save your eSIM data for the road.

Good to know

  • Currency: Canadian dollar (CAD); cards and contactless payments are widely accepted
  • Capital: Ottawa
  • Languages: English and French (French is the main language in Quebec)
  • Time zone: six zones, from UTC−8 on the Pacific coast to UTC−3:30 in Newfoundland; most areas move their clocks forward an hour in summer
  • Plug type: A and B, 120 V
  • Don't miss: Niagara Falls, Banff and Lake Louise in the Rockies, and the cobbled streets of Old Quebec

Travel tips for staying connected in Canada

  • Download offline maps before driving the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper, where you can go a long way without any signal.
  • Cold drains phone batteries fast, so carry a power bank on winter ski days in Whistler or Banff.
  • Starting an Alaska cruise from Vancouver? At sea, phones can switch to the ship's own maritime network, which home carriers may bill at high rates, so keep data roaming off on your home line once you sail.
  • If a road trip uses more data than planned, top up the same eSIM from your HelloSIM account or the app, with no reinstall.

The Canada plan works in Canada only. If your trip also crosses into the United States — a day at Niagara on the New York side, a drive from Vancouver to Seattle or that Alaska cruise — a North America plan covers Canada, the USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Bermuda on one eSIM.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work in Canada?
Yes. Any eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked phone can use a HelloSIM Canada eSIM, which connects to local partner networks such as Bell, Rogers and Telus once you arrive.
Which networks does the Canada eSIM use?
The plan uses Bell, Rogers, Telus, Freedom Mobile, SaskTel and Eastlink. You get 5G where these networks offer it and your phone supports it, and 4G/LTE elsewhere.
How much data do I need for a week in Canada?
Around 1 GB covers maps and messaging, while 3–5 GB suits social media and everyday browsing. If you make video calls or work online, plan on 10 GB or more.
When should I install my Canada eSIM?
Install it at home over Wi-Fi a few days before you fly. Validity only starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in Canada, so installing early does not use up any days.
Will I keep my phone number and WhatsApp?
Yes. HelloSIM eSIMs are data-only, so your own SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps using your usual number.
Will I have signal outside the cities, for example in Banff or Jasper?
Towns such as Banff and Jasper generally have coverage, but signal can disappear on mountain highways and in the backcountry. Download offline maps before any long drive or hike.
