Almost every visitor to Samoa lands at Faleolo International Airport on the north-west coast of Upolu, a drive along the coast road from Apia. Set up a HelloSIM eSIM before you leave home and your phone picks up the local network once the plane is on the ground.
Why use an eSIM in Samoa
- Order a taxi or message your beach fale host from the arrivals hall instead of looking for a phone shop.
- Keep the Upolu–Savai'i ferry timetable, your car hire details and accommodation bookings to hand.
- Follow the coast roads that circle both main islands, where village names and turn-offs are easy to miss.
- Using your home plan abroad often means a daily roaming fee or costly add-ons — check your current tariff before you travel.
- Your own SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, WhatsApp keeps your usual number, and the plan only starts counting days when it first connects in Samoa.
Samoa trips usually split between Upolu, home to Apia and the south-coast beaches, and the larger, quieter island of Savai'i across the Apolima Strait. A data line of your own keeps the ferry, the rental car and the next night's fale booking under control as you move between the two.

Networks and coverage
Your Samoa eSIM connects to Digicel, using its 4G network, so wherever there is signal you will be on 4G/LTE rather than 5G.
Signal is usually strongest in and around Apia, along Upolu's north coast between the capital and the airport, and in the bigger villages on the coast roads. On Savai'i, the area around the ferry terminal at Salelologa and the main coastal villages generally have coverage.
It gets patchier away from the shore. The forested, mountainous interior of both islands, remote stretches of Savai'i's coastline, the small islands of Manono and Apolima, and the open water in between can all leave you with weak signal or none.
How to get connected
- 1Make sure your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked, then choose the Samoa plan; the QR code lands in your inbox straight away and is also stored in your HelloSIM account.
- 2Install it on home Wi-Fi a day or two before departure: on iPhone open Settings → Mobile → Add eSIM; on Android look under Settings → Network & internet or Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM.
- 3After landing at Faleolo, turn the HelloSIM line on, choose it as your mobile data line and switch on Data Roaming for that line — it is required to connect and adds no cost, because the data is prepaid.
- 4Switch off data roaming on your home SIM so your usual carrier has nothing to bill while you are in the islands.
How much data do you need
- Light — WhatsApp, maps and checking ferry times: around 1 GB a week.
- Medium — posting beach photos, social media and everyday browsing: 3–5 GB a week.
- Heavy — video calls home, streaming or remote work from a resort: 10 GB or more a week.
Hotels in Apia usually offer Wi-Fi, but at simple beach fales it can be slow, limited to a shared area or missing altogether, so your own data tends to be the more dependable option.

Travel tips for staying connected in Samoa
- Download offline maps of both Upolu and Savai'i before you set off, since the inland roads and the far side of Savai'i can be out of range.
- Screenshot your ferry booking and car hire paperwork before the crossing from Mulifanua Wharf, as the signal can fade halfway across the strait.
- Pack a power bank for nights in beach fales, where sockets may be few or shared between guests.
- Sunday in Samoa is a day for church and family and many shops close, but you can still top up the same eSIM in the HelloSIM app or on the website.
- The eSIM is data-only, so call friends and family over WhatsApp, FaceTime or Viber, and leave your home SIM switched on if someone needs to reach your usual number.
