Paraguay rewards travellers who step off the usual South American circuit: a relaxed capital on the Paraguay River, UNESCO-listed Jesuit missions in the south and the vast, thinly populated Chaco in the west. Most flights land at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Luque, just outside Asunción, while many visitors cross overland from Brazil at Ciudad del Este or from Argentina at Encarnación. A HelloSIM eSIM gets you online without a detour to a phone shop.
Why use an eSIM in Paraguay
- Ready at the border: arriving by bus from Foz do Iguaçu or Posadas, you already have Paraguayan data installed.
- Useful on long journeys: keep maps and messaging running on the long bus rides between Asunción, Encarnación and Ciudad del Este.
- Same number, same WhatsApp: your home SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts.
- No roaming shocks: roaming in South America is often charged by the day by home carriers and can become costly — check your current tariff.
- Top up without reinstalling: add more data to the same eSIM from your account or the HelloSIM app.
The eSIM is data-only, so voice and video calls go through WhatsApp, FaceTime or similar apps. Your QR code arrives by email straight away after payment, and the validity period starts only when the eSIM first connects to a network in Paraguay.

Networks and coverage
In Paraguay, HelloSIM connects to Tigo, Personal and Claro, all on 4G. Coverage is strong across Greater Asunción, including Luque, San Lorenzo and Lambaré, in Ciudad del Este and Encarnación, and along the main highways that link the capital with the south and the east.
Beyond the main corridors it thins out. The Chaco has long stretches of road with weak or no signal between towns such as Filadelfia and Loma Plata, and the far north along the Paraguay River, rural farmland and river trips can all have gaps. In border cities your phone may pick up a Brazilian or Argentine network across the river; if data stops, select a Paraguayan network manually in your phone's network settings.
How to get connected
- 1Buy the Paraguay plan and open the QR-code email, which is also stored in your HelloSIM account and app.
- 2Still at home and connected to Wi-Fi, install the eSIM via Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM on iPhone, or Settings → Connections or Network & internet → SIM manager → Add eSIM on Android.
- 3Once you are in Paraguay, switch the HelloSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and allow Data Roaming on it — that is required, and it adds no cost because the data is prepaid.
- 4Turn off data roaming on your home line so it stays quiet while you travel.
How much data do you need
- Light, around 1 GB a week: maps, messaging, bus times and translation apps.
- Medium, 3–5 GB a week: social media, browsing, ride-hailing and photo sharing.
- Heavy, 10 GB or more: video calls, streaming or working on the road.
Hotels and cafés in Asunción and the larger towns usually have Wi-Fi, but it is far less common once you head into the Chaco.

Travel tips for staying connected in Paraguay
- Before driving the Ruta Transchaco, download offline maps of the whole Chaco and plan fuel and rest stops in advance, as there can be hours without signal.
- Many long-distance buses advertise Wi-Fi, but it is often unreliable, so keep your eSIM as the main connection.
- Ride-hailing apps are widely used in Asunción; keep mobile data on so your driver can reach you through the app.
- Iguazú Falls lies across the border in Argentina and Brazil, so your Paraguay plan will not cover a day trip there.
