Lesotho eSIM: Mobile Data from Maseru to the Mountain Passes

Get mobile data in Lesotho on the Vodacom 4G network. Install your HelloSIM eSIM before you cross the border or fly into Maseru, and keep your own number.

Most visitors reach Lesotho by road from South Africa, crossing at Maseru Bridge or climbing the Sani Pass, while flights land at Moshoeshoe I International Airport outside Maseru. Install a HelloSIM eSIM before you set off and it connects once you are inside Lesotho.

Why use an eSIM in Lesotho

  • Lesotho is often added to a South Africa road trip, so you can have Lesotho data installed and waiting before you even reach the border post.
  • Check road conditions, fuel stops and lodge directions before tackling mountain routes such as the Sani Pass or the road up to Katse Dam.
  • Stay in touch with pony-trekking guides and lodges in Malealea or Semonkong while you are in town and on the way there.
  • Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps your own number.
  • Roaming in Lesotho on your home tariff can be costly, so check whether your carrier charges a daily fee before you cross.

Lesotho sits entirely above 1,000 metres, and its roads wind through high valleys and over passes where towns are few and far between. Having your own data in the lowland towns lets you load maps, check the weather and confirm bookings before the next stretch without signal.

Networks and coverage

HelloSIM's Lesotho eSIM connects to Vodacom on its 4G network, which means 4G/LTE rather than 5G.

You can usually rely on a signal in Maseru and in the lowland towns along the western side of the country, such as Teyateyaneng, Leribe, Mafeteng and Mohale's Hoek.

In the highlands it is a different story. Mountain passes, deep valleys and remote villages can have weak or no signal, and the Sani Pass and long stretches of the mountain roads to Mokhotlong and Thaba-Tseka are best treated as offline.

How to get connected

  1. 1Before you buy the Lesotho plan, check in Settings that your phone offers an Add eSIM option and is not locked to a carrier. The QR code reaches your inbox straight away and is stored in your HelloSIM account and app as well.
  2. 2Install it at home over Wi-Fi before the trip. iPhone owners open Settings → Mobile (or Cellular) → Add eSIM. Android: Settings → Connections or Network & internet → SIM manager → Add eSIM, with the exact wording depending on the brand.
  3. 3Once you are in Lesotho, turn the HelloSIM line on, set it as your mobile data line and turn on Data Roaming for that line. The eSIM cannot connect without it, and it costs nothing extra because the data is prepaid.
  4. 4Keep data roaming switched off on your home line, so your own operator cannot add roaming charges.

How much data do you need

  • Light: maps, messages and weather checks, about 1 GB a week.
  • Medium: sharing mountain photos, browsing and social media, 3–5 GB a week.
  • Heavy: video calls, streaming or uploading lots of footage, 10 GB or more a week.

Hotels and lodges in Maseru generally have Wi-Fi, but in the mountains it can be limited or unavailable, so do your heavier browsing while you are in the towns.

Good to know

  • Currency: Lesotho loti (LSL), pegged one-to-one to the South African rand, which is also widely accepted
  • Capital: Maseru
  • Languages: Sesotho and English
  • Time zone: UTC+2, the same as South Africa
  • Plug type: M, the large round three-pin plug also used in South Africa
  • Don't miss: Maletsunyane Falls at Semonkong, the historic mountain stronghold of Thaba-Bosiu, and pony trekking around Malealea

Travel tips for staying connected in Lesotho

  • Download offline maps for the whole country while you have signal in Maseru or another lowland town, before heading into the mountains.
  • Before driving the Sani Pass or the high roads to Katse Dam, send your lodge your expected arrival time while you are still connected, since the signal can vanish for long stretches.
  • In winter, snow can affect the high passes, so check the latest road news before leaving town.
  • Combining Lesotho with South Africa? The Lesotho plan works only in Lesotho, so add a separate South Africa plan for that part of the route; most eSIM phones can hold both, and you simply switch the data line when you cross the border.
  • Cold mountain nights drain batteries faster, so keep your phone and a power bank warm inside your bag.

Planning a trip into the Kingdom in the Sky? Install your eSIM before you go and you will be online from the first lowland town.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work in Lesotho?
Yes. With an eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked phone, your HelloSIM eSIM connects to the local network once you are in Lesotho.
Which network does the Lesotho eSIM use?
It connects to Vodacom on 4G/LTE. You will not get 5G on this plan.
How much data do I need for a week in Lesotho?
For maps, messages and weather checks, about 1 GB a week is enough. Allow 3–5 GB for photos and social media, or 10 GB or more for video calls and streaming.
When should I install my Lesotho eSIM?
Install it at home over Wi-Fi before you leave, especially if you are driving in from South Africa. Its validity only starts when it first connects in Lesotho.
Will my number and WhatsApp still work in Lesotho?
Yes. HelloSIM eSIMs are data-only, so your own SIM stays in place for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps your usual number.
Will I have signal in the mountains and on the Sani Pass?
Maseru and the lowland towns usually have good coverage, but mountain passes, valleys and remote villages can have weak signal or none. Download offline maps and confirm bookings before heading into the highlands.
