Jamaica eSIM: Mobile Data from Montego Bay to Kingston

Stay online in Jamaica with a HelloSIM eSIM on the Flow and Digicel networks. Install it at home, connect when you land in Montego Bay or Kingston and keep your number.

Most holidays in Jamaica begin at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, while Norman Manley International serves Kingston, and cruise ships call at Falmouth, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. A HelloSIM eSIM lets you skip the SIM counter and be online for the transfer to your resort or villa.

Why use an eSIM in Jamaica

  • Stay reachable on WhatsApp when you leave the resort — on a catamaran, at the waterfalls or out for sunset in Negril.
  • Resort Wi-Fi does not always stretch to the beach, the pool or your excursion bus, but your own data line goes where you go.
  • Home-carrier roaming often adds a daily charge that can make a two-week stay expensive — check your current tariff before you travel.
  • Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and nothing changes with WhatsApp.
  • Validity only starts when the eSIM connects in Jamaica, so you can buy it as soon as your flights are booked.

Jamaica is made for day trips: river rafting, coffee farm tours, jerk shacks along the coast road and live music in Kingston. Having data on hand makes it simple to share a pick-up location with a driver, check reviews and keep your group in touch.

Networks and coverage

The HelloSIM Jamaica eSIM connects to Flow, with 5G where available, and Digicel on 4G. A 5G connection needs a 5G-capable phone and Flow 5G coverage; otherwise you will be on 4G/LTE.

Signal is strong in Kingston, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril, and generally good along the north coast highway that links the main resort areas.

Coverage becomes patchier as you head inland. The Blue Mountains, the rugged Cockpit Country and parts of the rural interior can have weak spots or none at all, as can some quieter stretches of the south coast. Out at sea on a boat trip, expect the signal to fade the further you are from shore.

How to get connected

  1. 1Make sure your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your home carrier, then buy the Jamaica plan. The QR code is delivered by email straight away.
  2. 2Before you leave home, connect to Wi-Fi and scan the code: on iPhone via Settings → Mobile → Add eSIM; on Android via Settings → Connections or Network & internet → SIM manager → Add eSIM.
  3. 3Once you land, turn the HelloSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and switch on Data Roaming for that line. The data is prepaid, so this does not cost anything extra.
  4. 4Keep data roaming off on your home line to avoid charges from your own carrier.

How much data do you need

  • Light — WhatsApp, maps and booking a table: around 1 GB a week.
  • Regular — posting holiday photos, browsing and the odd voice call over apps: 3–5 GB a week.
  • Heavy — video calls, streaming or working remotely from a villa: 10 GB a week or more.

Resorts and many restaurants have Wi-Fi, which is useful for backing up photos at the end of the day.

Good to know

  • Currency: Jamaican dollar (JMD); US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas
  • Capital: Kingston
  • Languages: English is the official language; Jamaican Patois is widely spoken
  • Time zone: UTC−5 all year, with no daylight saving
  • Plug type: A and B, 110 V
  • Don't miss: Dunn's River Falls near Ocho Rios, Seven Mile Beach in Negril, and the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston

Travel tips for staying connected in Jamaica

  • Download offline maps before heading up into the Blue Mountains for a coffee tour or the pre-dawn hike to Blue Mountain Peak.
  • Leave network selection on automatic so your phone can use whichever network, Flow or Digicel, gives the better signal where you are.
  • Arriving by cruise ship? At sea your phone may connect to the ship's maritime network, which home carriers often bill at high rates. Keep data roaming off on your home line and wait until you are in port.
  • Save your airport transfer details and resort address offline, so you have them even before your phone has connected.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work in Jamaica?
Yes. A HelloSIM Jamaica eSIM works on any eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked phone and connects to a local network once you arrive.
Which networks does the Jamaica eSIM use?
It uses Flow, with 5G where available, and Digicel on 4G. If your phone or location does not support 5G, you will be connected on 4G/LTE.
How much data do I need for a week in Jamaica?
Around 1 GB is enough for messaging and maps, and 3–5 GB suits regular social media and browsing. Allow 10 GB or more if you stream or make video calls.
When should I install my Jamaica eSIM?
Install it at home over Wi-Fi before you fly. Your plan's validity starts only when the eSIM first connects to a network in Jamaica.
Will I keep my number and WhatsApp?
Yes. The eSIM is data-only, so your own SIM stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp continues to use your usual number.
Is there coverage outside Montego Bay, for example in the Blue Mountains?
The main towns and the north coast are well covered, but the Blue Mountains and Cockpit Country can have weak or no signal. Download offline maps before you go.
