Guinea eSIM: Mobile Data for Conakry and Work Trips Inland

Mobile data in Guinea on the Orange 4G network. Install a HelloSIM eSIM before you fly to Conakry and keep your own number for calls while you work.

International flights to Guinea arrive at Conakry International Airport, in the Gbessia area of the capital. A HelloSIM eSIM installed before you leave connects once you arrive, so you can reach your driver, colleagues or hotel as soon as you switch your phone back on.

Why use an eSIM in Guinea

  • Many visitors come to Guinea for work, from mining projects to port logistics and development programmes, and need email, calls and shared documents from day one.
  • Coordinate airport pick-ups and meetings across Conakry's congested roads by WhatsApp, with your live location shared with your driver.
  • Your home number stays on your physical SIM, so clients and colleagues can still call and text you as usual.
  • Roaming on a personal or company tariff often comes with daily fees or expensive bundles in Guinea, so look up the current rates before you go.
  • Validity only begins when the eSIM connects in Guinea, which means you can set it up well ahead of a trip whose dates may still shift.

Conakry runs along a long peninsula into the Atlantic, and getting between Kaloum, the airport and the residential districts can take up a large part of the day. Being able to answer emails and join calls from the back of a car turns that time into working time.

Networks and coverage

In Guinea, HelloSIM uses Orange on its 4G network, so you will connect on 4G/LTE rather than 5G.

Coverage is usually strongest across Conakry, including Kaloum, Dixinn, Ratoma and the other city districts. In larger towns such as Kindia, Mamou, Labé and Kankan you can generally expect a signal too.

Outside them, coverage thins out. On long roads through the interior, in the Fouta Djallon highlands between towns, in forested areas and at some remote project sites, the connection can be weak or absent. If a site relies on its own satellite link or Wi-Fi, ask your hosts what is available before you travel.

How to get connected

  1. 1Check that your phone handles eSIM and is carrier-unlocked; work phones may also be restricted by company settings, so confirm with your IT team. Then buy the Guinea plan, and the QR code lands in your inbox straight away and also sits in your HelloSIM account.
  2. 2Install it before departure over Wi-Fi. On an iPhone go to Settings → Mobile → Add eSIM; on Android open Settings → Connections or Network & internet → SIM manager → Add eSIM. If scanning is not possible, type in the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the email.
  3. 3When you land in Conakry, turn on the HelloSIM line, make it your mobile data line and turn on Data Roaming for it. It will not connect without this, and since the data is prepaid there is nothing extra to pay.
  4. 4Turn off data roaming on your home or work line to avoid roaming charges from that carrier.

How much data do you need

  • Light: email, WhatsApp and maps, about 1 GB a week.
  • Medium: browsing, shared documents and some social media, 3–5 GB a week.
  • Heavy: daily video meetings, large file transfers or streaming, 10 GB or more a week.

Business hotels in Conakry usually offer Wi-Fi, but quality varies, so it is worth having your own data as a dependable fallback for calls.

Good to know

  • Currency: Guinean franc (GNF)
  • Capital: Conakry
  • Languages: French (official), with Susu, Pular and Maninka widely spoken
  • Time zone: UTC+0, with no daylight saving
  • Don't miss: the Îles de Los off Conakry, the highland scenery and waterfalls of the Fouta Djallon, and the Voile de la Mariée waterfall near Kindia

Travel tips for staying connected in Guinea

  • Before driving inland to Kindia, the Fouta Djallon or a project site, download offline maps and save key addresses, as signal can disappear between towns.
  • Keep your home SIM switched on alongside the eSIM: on a dual-SIM phone you can still take calls on your usual number while HelloSIM handles the data.
  • Hotel Wi-Fi can drop out when the electricity fails, and mobile data keeps you working through it; pack a power bank so the phone keeps going as well.
  • Conakry's rainy season brings very heavy downpours, so a waterproof pouch for your phone is worth packing between meetings.
  • Running low before a deadline? Add data to the same eSIM from the HelloSIM app or your account; no new QR code is needed.

Got a Conakry trip in the diary? Sort out your data now and land ready to work.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work in Guinea?
It does. If your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked, a HelloSIM eSIM connects to a local network in Guinea once you arrive.
Which network will I use in Guinea?
The Guinea eSIM uses Orange on 4G/LTE. It is not a 5G plan.
How much data do I need for a week-long business trip to Guinea?
Email, messaging and maps need around 1 GB, and regular browsing and shared files 3–5 GB. With daily video meetings or large attachments, 10 GB or more is safer.
When should I install my Guinea eSIM?
Install it before you fly to Conakry while you have Wi-Fi. Your plan's days only start counting once it connects in Guinea.
Can colleagues still call me on my usual number?
Yes. HelloSIM eSIMs are data-only, so your own SIM stays in the phone for calls and SMS, and WhatsApp remains on your usual number.
Is there coverage outside Conakry?
Larger towns usually have signal, but it can be weak or missing on interior roads, in the highlands and at remote sites. Download offline maps and check what connectivity your destination has before you go.
