The Best Time to Visit Ghana: Seasons, Weather & Festivals

Ghana has two main seasons rather than four. Here's when to go for dry skies, fewer crowds, lower prices, and the country's biggest festivals.

Ghana's two seasons

Ghana sits just north of the equator, so it has a tropical climate with two seasons rather than four: a dry season and a wet season. Temperatures stay warm year-round, usually between 25C and 33C, with high humidity along the coast in Accra and Cape Coast.

Dry season (peak): November to March

This is the most comfortable and popular time to visit. Rain is rare, roads are reliable, and wildlife gathers around waterholes in Mole National Park.

  • December and January are the busiest, driven by the diaspora returning home and the holidays
  • Harmattan winds blow dry, dusty air from the Sahara between December and February, cooling nights but hazing the sky
  • Book flights and Accra hotels well ahead for late December

Wet season: April to October

Rain comes in two pulses: a heavy spell from May to June and a shorter one around September to October, with a relative lull in July and August.

  • Landscapes turn lush and green; Kakum National Park's canopy walkway is at its most dramatic
  • Prices drop and crowds thin, making this a real shoulder-season value window
  • Pack a rain jacket and expect occasional muddy roads in the north

Festivals worth planning around

  • Homowo (Ga people, Accra), August to September, a vibrant harvest festival
  • Aboakyer deer-hunting festival in Winneba, first Saturday of May
  • Panafest and Emancipation Day (Cape Coast), themed culture and heritage events, usually July to August
  • Chale Wote Street Art Festival in Jamestown, Accra, August
  • Asante Kente and Akwasidae durbars in Kumasi happen on a 42-day cycle through the year
  • December in Accra (Detty December) packs concerts, beach parties, and Afrobeats events

When should you go?

For classic sightseeing and wildlife, aim for November to March. For green scenery, lower prices, and a quieter trip, the July to August lull within the wet season is a smart pick. Avoid heavy May and June if mud and downpours bother you.
