Why Cameroon surprises first-timers
Often called "Africa in miniature", Cameroon packs rainforest, savanna, beaches and the volcanic peak of Mount Cameroon into one country. Most travellers arrive at Douala (DLA) or Yaoundé (NSI), so a little preparation goes a long way.
Plugs and voltage
Cameroon runs on 230V at 50Hz and uses Type C and Type E plugs (two round pins), the same as France and much of mainland Europe. Travellers from the UK, US or Australia need an adapter. Power cuts are common, so a power bank and a small torch are genuinely useful.
Language basics
Cameroon is officially bilingual: French and English. French dominates in Douala, Yaoundé and most of the country; English is spoken in the Northwest and Southwest regions. A few French phrases help everywhere.
- Bonjour - Hello
- Merci - Thank you
- Combien? - How much?
- Où est...? - Where is...?
Local languages like Ewondo, Fulfulde and Pidgin English are also widely heard.
What to pack
- Lightweight, breathable clothing plus a rain jacket (the wet season runs roughly June to October)
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate - it is required for entry
- Antimalarial tablets and strong insect repellent
- Cash in CFA francs (XAF) - cards are rarely accepted outside big hotels
- A photocopy of your passport and visa
Staying connected
The main networks are MTN Cameroon and Orange, with reasonable 4G in cities but patchy coverage rurally. Buying a local physical SIM means showing ID and registering. An eSIM is the easier route - you are online the moment you land, with no kiosk queue.
7 quick tips
- Carry small CFA notes for taxis, markets and motorbike taxis ("bend-skins")
- Agree the fare before getting in a shared taxi
- Drink bottled water and avoid ice from unknown sources
- Ask before photographing people, bridges or government buildings
- Keep your yellow fever card with your passport
- Avoid the Far North and Anglophone conflict zones - check current advisories
- Greet people first - politeness opens doors in Cameroon
