Cambodia's two seasons
Cambodia has a tropical monsoon climate with just two seasons: dry (November to April) and wet (May to October). There is no real winter, only shifts in heat and rain. Temperatures usually sit between 25C and 35C all year.
Dry season (November to April) - peak
This is the most popular time to visit. Skies are clear, humidity is lower, and the temples of Angkor near Siem Reap are easiest to explore.
- November to January is the coolest and most comfortable stretch, often 24C to 30C.
- February to April turns hot, with April reaching 38C or more in Phnom Penh and the lowlands.
Expect higher hotel prices and busy temples around Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year.
Wet season (May to October) - shoulder and green season
The rains usually come as short, heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day drizzle. The countryside turns lush, the moat around Angkor Wat fills, and waterfalls in places like Mondulkiri run full.
- Fewer crowds and lower prices.
- September and October are the wettest months and can bring flooding.
- Tonle Sap lake swells dramatically, ideal for seeing floating villages.
Best months overall
November, December and January offer the finest balance of dry weather and comfortable heat. If you want low prices and green landscapes, June and July are a smart shoulder-season choice.

- April: Khmer New Year (Choul Chnam Thmey), the biggest holiday, with water-splashing, temple visits and quiet cities as locals travel home.
- May: Royal Ploughing Ceremony in Phnom Penh marks the start of the planting season.
- September/October: Pchum Ben, a deeply important ancestor-honouring festival when families bring offerings to pagodas.
- November: Bon Om Touk, the spectacular Water Festival, when the Tonle Sap reverses flow. Boat races fill the riverfront in Phnom Penh.
- November: the Angkor Sankranta and various lantern celebrations also light up Siem Reap.
