Blagaj Tekke
A white dervish monastery (tekija) sits dramatically beneath a cliff where the Buna River gushes from a cave. It is one of the most photogenic spots in the country and only minutes from Mostar.
Pocitelj
This stone Ottoman-medieval village tumbles up a hillside above the Neretva. Climb the fortress tower for views, and try pomegranate juice from roadside stalls in autumn.
Una National Park
In the northwest, the Una River dazzles with the Strbacki Buk waterfall and travertine cascades. It is the country's rafting and kayaking capital, based around the town of Bihac.
Travnik and Jajce
Jajce is famous for a waterfall that crashes right in the town centre where the Pliva meets the Vrbas. Nearby Travnik, a former Ottoman vizier seat, has colourful mosques and the birthplace of Nobel laureate Ivo Andric.
Sutjeska and the Tjentiste mountains
Bosnia's oldest national park protects Perucica, one of Europe's last primeval forests, plus the soaring Maglic peak. Hikers and history fans both find rewards here.
