Bosnia and Herzegovina in a nutshell
Bosnia and Herzegovina packs a lot into a small country: alpine mountains around Sarajevo, Mediterranean warmth in Herzegovina near Mostar, and rivers like the Neretva and Una that stay cold but stunning. Because the climate splits between continental and Mediterranean, the right season depends on where you are headed.
Spring (April to June)
Spring is arguably the best all-round time. Sarajevo and Mostar warm into the high teens and low 20s Celsius, wildflowers cover the hills, and rivers run high and dramatic from snowmelt. Crowds are still thin and prices are lower than summer. Pack a light jacket for cool evenings in the mountains.
Summer (July to August)
This is peak season. Mostar can hit 35 C and above, making the Neretva and the Old Bridge divers the main attraction. Sarajevo is busy but lively, and the highland villages around Jajce and Travnik stay pleasantly cooler. Book accommodation in Mostar and Sarajevo well ahead, as the most central guesthouses fill fast.
Autumn (September to October)
A superb shoulder season. The summer heat eases, the Una and Vrbas rivers are ideal for rafting, and forests around Sutjeska and Kozara turn gold and red. September still feels like summer in Herzegovina, while October brings crisp, photogenic light and far fewer tourists.
Winter (November to March)
Winter belongs to the mountains. The 1984 Olympic resorts of Jahorina and Bjelasnica offer some of the best-value skiing in Europe, often well under the cost of the Alps. Sarajevo glows with holiday markets, though Herzegovina stays milder and grey rather than snowy.
Festivals and events by month
- February: Sarajevo ski season in full swing on Jahorina and Bjelasnica
- July: Bascarsija Nights, Sarajevo's month-long arts festival; Old Bridge diving competition in Mostar
- August: Sarajevo Film Festival, the largest in the region, draws stars and crowds
- September: Mostar's autumn cultural events and harvest season in Herzegovina
- December: Christmas and New Year markets in Sarajevo
When to go, in short
For warm weather and festivals, choose July and August. For the best balance of weather, price, and quiet, target May, June, or September. For skiing, come January and February.
