Culture, Customs and Etiquette in Azerbaijan: A Traveler's Guide

A land of hospitality

Azerbaijan sits where Europe meets Asia, and its culture blends Turkic, Persian and Soviet influences. Locals are famously warm, and a guest is treated almost as a gift. Understanding a few customs will make your trip in Baku, Sheki or Ganja far smoother.

Greetings

• Men shake hands firmly; a hand on the heart adds warmth.
• Wait for a woman to extend her hand first.
• The common greeting is Salam (hello). Sag ol means thank you.
• Use a person's first name with the suffix muellim (for men) or muellime (for women) to show respect.

Tea and hospitality

Tea (chay), served in pear-shaped *armudu* glasses, is the heart of social life. It is offered everywhere, often with jam, sugar cubes or sweets. Always accept at least one glass; refusing outright can seem cold. Never rush the ritual.

Dining etiquette

• Wait to be seated and let elders begin eating first.
• The host will insist you eat more; a gentle second helping is polite.
• Bread is respected; do not place it upside down or waste it.
• If invited to a home, bring sweets, pastries or flowers (an odd number).

Dos and donts

• Do dress modestly at religious sites; women cover their heads and remove shoes at mosques like Bibi-Heybat.
• Do remove your shoes when entering a home.
• Dont discuss the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict casually; it is deeply sensitive.
• Dont photograph people, especially women, without asking.
• Dont show the sole of your foot toward someone.

Tipping norms

Tipping is appreciated but not rigid. In restaurants, leave around 10 percent if a service charge is not already added. Round up taxi fares. A few manat for hotel porters or helpful guides is welcomed.

Religion and respect

Azerbaijan is majority Shia Muslim but largely secular. Alcohol is widely available and dress is relaxed in Baku. During Ramadan, be discreet about eating in public out of courtesy.
