Mexico's two seasons
Mexico doesn't really do four seasons. Instead, the year splits into a dry season (roughly November to April) and a wet season (May to October). The dry months bring sunny skies, lower humidity and warm days across most of the country, which is exactly why they are the most popular time to travel.
Peak season: December to April
This is high season, and for good reason. The beaches of Cancun, Tulum and the Riviera Maya enjoy near-perfect weather, while colonial cities like Oaxaca, San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato stay mild and dry. Expect the highest prices and busiest resorts around Christmas, New Year and Easter (Semana Santa). Whale-watching in Baja California Sur also peaks from January to March.
Shoulder season: May, June and November
These months are a sweet spot. May and June are hot but still mostly dry inland, with fewer crowds and softer prices before the summer rush. November is arguably the best all-rounder: the rains have eased, the landscape is green, and you catch one of Mexico's greatest celebrations.
Wet season: June to October
Don't write off summer. Rain usually falls as short afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours, and the countryside turns lush. The main caveat is the Atlantic hurricane season (June to November), which can affect the Caribbean and Gulf coasts, with the highest risk in September and October. The Pacific coast and central highlands are generally safer bets during these months.

- Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos), November 1 to 2 — vibrant ofrendas, marigolds and parades, with Oaxaca and Mexico City the standout places to experience it.
- Guelaguetza, late July — Oaxaca's huge celebration of Indigenous dance and culture.
- Cervantino Festival, October — Guanajuato's world-class arts and music festival.
- Independence Day, September 15 to 16 — the famous *Grito* and fireworks nationwide.
- Carnival, February or March — Veracruz and Mazatlán host Mexico's biggest pre-Lent parties.
