The Gambia eSIM: Stay Online on the Smiling Coast and Upriver

Get mobile data in The Gambia on the Comium 4G network. Install your HelloSIM eSIM before you fly to Banjul and keep your own number for calls and WhatsApp.

Almost every holidaymaker lands at Banjul International Airport in Yundum, a short drive inland from the resort strip around Kololi, Kotu and Cape Point. Set up a HelloSIM eSIM at home and it connects to the local network once you land, so you can message your driver or hotel from the arrivals hall.

Why use an eSIM in The Gambia

  • Sort out your airport transfer, find your hotel on the map and share your location without looking for a SIM card seller on your first day.
  • Message the guides and drivers you book for birdwatching walks, Abuko Nature Reserve or a day at Makasutu, and check exactly where they are waiting.
  • Roaming on your home tariff in The Gambia can be costly, with many carriers charging by the day or by the megabyte, so check your rates before you travel.
  • Your home SIM stays in the phone, so your usual number still receives calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working as normal.
  • The plan's days only start once the eSIM connects in The Gambia, so you lose nothing by buying it a week or two early.

The Gambia is a narrow ribbon of land on either side of the River Gambia, and many trips split their time between the Atlantic coast and a few nights upriver. Your own data line keeps ferry times, lodge bookings and driver contacts in one place, whichever bank you happen to be on.

Networks and coverage

HelloSIM's eSIM for The Gambia connects to Comium on its 4G network, so expect 4G/LTE throughout rather than 5G.

Signal is usually reliable in Banjul, in the busy Serrekunda and Kanifing area, and along the coastal strip from Bakau and Fajara through Kotu, Kololi and Brufut. Brikama and the larger towns on the main roads generally have coverage as well.

Further inland it becomes less predictable. On long boat trips on the river, around the wetlands and reserves, and in the villages between bigger towns upcountry, signal can be weak or drop out completely.

How to get connected

  1. 1Confirm your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your carrier, then choose The Gambia plan. Your QR code arrives by email straight away and is kept in your HelloSIM account too.
  2. 2While still at home on Wi-Fi, scan it: on iPhone, go to Settings → Mobile (or Cellular) → Add eSIM; on Android, look under Settings → Network & internet or Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM.
  3. 3After landing in Banjul, switch the HelloSIM line on, pick it as your mobile data line and enable Data Roaming on it. The eSIM needs this to connect, and there is no extra charge because your data is prepaid.
  4. 4Switch off data roaming on your home SIM, so your own carrier has no chance to bill you while you are away.

How much data do you need

  • Light: messaging, maps and the odd email from your sun lounger, about 1 GB a week.
  • Medium: posting birding and beach photos, browsing and social media, 3–5 GB a week.
  • Heavy: video calls home, streaming or remote work, 10 GB or more a week.

Many hotels along the coast offer Wi-Fi, but it can be slow or limited to the lobby, and lodges upcountry may have little or none.

Good to know

  • Currency: Gambian dalasi (GMD)
  • Capital: Banjul
  • Languages: English (official), with Mandinka, Wolof and Fula widely spoken
  • Time zone: UTC+0 (GMT) all year
  • Plug type: G, the British three-pin plug
  • Don't miss: Kunta Kinteh Island near Juffureh, the Wassu stone circles, and the busy fishing beach at Tanji

Travel tips for staying connected in The Gambia

  • Download offline maps of the whole country before heading upcountry and save your lodge's location, as the journey east passes through long stretches with poor signal.
  • On the Banjul–Barra ferry and on boat trips to see the chimpanzees of the River Gambia National Park, the connection may come and go, so send important messages before you board.
  • Power cuts can happen, so carry a charged power bank on days out, particularly away from the coast.
  • The Gambia plan works in The Gambia only. If your route crosses into neighbouring Senegal, arrange separate data for that part of the trip before you go.
  • Need more data halfway through the holiday? Top up the same eSIM in the HelloSIM app or your account, with nothing to reinstall.

Flying out to the Smiling Coast? Install your eSIM before you leave and step off the plane already connected.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work in The Gambia?
Yes. A HelloSIM eSIM works on any eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked phone and picks up a local network once you arrive in The Gambia.
Which network does The Gambia eSIM use?
Plans run on Comium's 4G/LTE network. 5G is not offered on The Gambia plan.
How much data do I need for a week in The Gambia?
Around 1 GB is fine for messages and maps, and 3–5 GB suits a week of photos, browsing and social media. If you make video calls or work online, go for 10 GB or more.
When should I install my eSIM for The Gambia?
Install it at home over Wi-Fi before your flight to Banjul. The plan's validity only starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in The Gambia.
Do I keep my own number and WhatsApp in The Gambia?
Yes. The eSIM is data-only, so your regular SIM stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp continues on your usual number.
Is there coverage upcountry and on the river?
Towns along the main roads usually have signal, but it can be weak or missing on the river, in the reserves and between villages. Download offline maps and save your bookings before travelling inland.
