Getting around Estonia

Estonia is small, flat and superbly connected, so getting between Tallinn, Tartu, Pärnu and the islands is easy and cheap. Public transport is clean, punctual and largely cashless.

Public transport in Tallinn

Tallinn runs trams, trolleybuses and city buses managed by TLT. Tap a contactless bank card or buy a Tallinn Card for unlimited rides. A single ticket from the driver costs about 2 euros, but a validated Ühiskaart (smartcard) ride is cheaper at around 1.50 euros.

• Validate your smartcard on the green reader every time you board.
• The number 4 tram links the airport to the city centre in about 15 minutes.

Note: Estonia has no metro. Trams cover the core, while buses reach the suburbs.

Trains

Elron operates comfortable, modern trains from Tallinn's Balti Jaam station. Popular routes include Tallinn–Tartu (about 2 hours), Tallinn–Narva and Tallinn–Pärnu. Buy tickets via the Elron app, online or onboard. Trains are punctual and a scenic way to cross the country.

Intercity buses

Coaches are often faster and cheaper than trains for many routes. Lux Express and Hansabuss offer frequent, comfortable services from Tallinn Bus Station (Autobussijaam) with free Wi-Fi and hot drinks. Tartu and Pärnu are well served, and Lux Express also runs to Riga and St Petersburg.

Ferries to the islands

Praamid (TS Laevad) ferries connect the mainland to Saaremaa and Hiiumaa. Book vehicle crossings online in summer, as they fill quickly. The Tallinn–Helsinki ferry (Tallink, Viking Line, Eckerö) takes about 2 hours.

Ride apps and taxis

Bolt, founded in Tallinn, is the dominant ride app and usually cheaper than street taxis. Uber also operates. Always order through the app for a fixed, fair price.

Car rental and driving

Renting a car makes sense for the islands and rural west. Roads are good and uncrowded. Drive on the right, keep headlights on day and night (a legal requirement), and watch for elk in forested areas. Winter tyres are mandatory from December to March.
