Ancient Thebes splits into two. On the East Bank, visit Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple. On the West Bank lies the Valley of the Kings, where Tutankhamun's tomb was found.
4. A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan
A three- or four-night cruise glides past temples at Edfu and Kom Ombo while you watch village life and feluccas drift by. It is the classic way to see Upper Egypt.
5. Abu Simbel
Ramesses II's colossal rock temples were relocated stone by stone to escape Lake Nasser. The twice-yearly Sun Festival, when light reaches the inner sanctuary, draws crowds.
6. Diving and snorkelling in the Red Sea
Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab and Hurghada offer warm water, coral walls and the famous Blue Hole at Dahab. Visibility is excellent year-round.
7. Islamic and Coptic Cairo
Lose yourself in Khan el-Khalili bazaar, climb the Citadel of Saladin for city views, and explore the hanging churches of Coptic Cairo.
8. The White Desert and Bahariya Oasis
A few hours from Cairo, chalk-white rock formations rise from the sand. Camp overnight under the stars on a 4x4 desert safari.
9. Aswan and Philae Temple
Egypt's gentlest city sits on a wide stretch of Nile. Take a boat to the island temple of Philae, dedicated to Isis, and visit a Nubian village for bright houses and spiced food.
