When to go
Austria is a year-round destination, but the right month depends on whether you want alpine hiking, skiing, city culture or festivals. The country has a continental climate: warm summers in the valleys, snowy winters in the mountains, and lovely shoulder seasons.
Spring (March-May)
Spring is one of the best-value times to visit. Vienna, Salzburg and Graz are mild (10-18C), gardens bloom, and crowds are thin. The ski season winds down in April, while higher resorts like Hintertux glacier stay open. Easter markets bring decorated eggs and crafts to city squares.
Summer (June-August)
Peak season for the lakes and mountains. The Salzkammergut lakes (Wolfgangsee, Hallstatt) and Tyrol's trails are at their best, with temperatures of 20-30C. Expect higher prices and busy hotspots like Hallstatt. Highlights:
- Salzburg Festival (late July-August): world-class opera and theatre
- Bregenz Festival on Lake Constance, with its giant floating stage
- Long days perfect for hiking and swimming
Autumn (September-October)
Shoulder season and a local favourite. The weather is often stable and golden, vineyards in the Wachau Valley turn amber, and hiking is superb without summer crowds. Wine taverns (Heuriger) near Vienna celebrate the new vintage with Sturm, a young fermenting wine.
Winter (December-March)
Ski season runs roughly December to March in resorts like St. Anton, Solden, Ischgl and Kitzbuhel. Snow is most reliable from January. Before that:
- Christmas markets (mid-November to 24 December) in Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck — mulled wine (Gluhwein), gingerbread and crafts
- New Year's Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic on 1 January
- January's Hahnenkamm downhill race in Kitzbuhel
Peak vs shoulder season
- Peak: July-August (lakes/hiking) and late December-February (skiing). Highest prices, book early.
- Shoulder: May-June and September-October. Best balance of weather, value and fewer crowds.
- Quiet: early November and late April, when many mountain resorts pause between seasons.
