The Best Time to Visit Kosovo: Seasons, Weather and Festivals

From summer hikes in the Accursed Mountains to film festivals in Prizren, here's when to visit Kosovo for the weather and events you want.

When to go to Kosovo

Kosovo is small, landlocked and surprisingly varied, so the best time to visit depends on what you want. The country has a continental climate: hot summers, cold snowy winters, and pleasant springs and autumns. The capital Pristina sits in a basin, while the mountains around Peja and Brezovica stay cooler and greener.

For most travellers, the sweet spot is late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October), when days are warm, crowds are thin and prices are low.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is green and fresh. Snow melts off the Rugova Gorge and the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Nemuna), waterfalls run full, and Pristina cafes spill onto the streets. Daytime temperatures climb from around 10C in March to the low 20s by May. Pack layers as evenings stay cool.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is peak season. Pristina and Gjakova can hit 30 to 35C, but the mountains are perfect for hiking. This is the time to walk the Peaks of the Balkans trail or cool off in Lake Batllava. July and August also bring the diaspora home, so book accommodation early in Pristina, Peja and Prizren.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is arguably the best time of all. September keeps summer warmth without the crowds, and October turns the Rugova valleys gold. It is ideal for wine tasting in the Rahovec region, harvest season for Kosovo's vineyards.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is for skiers. Brezovica, in the Sharr Mountains, offers affordable slopes with day passes far cheaper than the Alps. Pristina gets cold and grey, often below freezing, but the cafe culture stays warm.

Festivals and events by month

  • March — Pristina hosts cultural and arts events as the season opens.
  • JulyHardh Fest wine festival in Rahovec celebrates the grape harvest.
  • AugustDokuFest, Kosovo's biggest international documentary and short film festival, fills Prizren's streets and rooftops for nine days.
  • September — Wine and harvest celebrations across Rahovec and the southwest.
  • September/OctoberPristina International Film Festival (PriFest) brings premieres to the capital.
  • NovemberIndependence-season and national holidays bring street life and music.
