Top Things to Do and See in Kenya

From the Maasai Mara wildebeest crossing to Diani's white-sand beaches, here are the experiences that make Kenya one of Africa's great travel destinations.

Why Kenya belongs on your list

Kenya packs an entire continent's worth of scenery into one country: savannah teeming with the Big Five, snow-dusted peaks on the equator, ancient Swahili towns and turquoise reefs. Here are the experiences worth planning a trip around.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

The Mara is Kenya's safari heartland. Between July and October the Great Migration sees over a million wildebeest and zebra cross the crocodile-filled Mara River. Park fees run around 200 USD per day for non-residents, but a single morning game drive can deliver lions, cheetahs and elephants in one sweep.

Amboseli and Mount Kilimanjaro views

Amboseli National Park offers Africa's most iconic photo: elephant herds framed by Mount Kilimanjaro rising across the Tanzanian border. Dawn and dusk give the clearest views before cloud rolls in.

Climb or trek Mount Kenya

At 5,199 metres, Mount Kenya is Africa's second-highest peak. Trekkers aim for Point Lenana (4,985 m), a non-technical summit reachable over three to four days through bamboo forest, moorland and glaciers.

Diani Beach and the Swahili coast

South of Mombasa, Diani Beach stretches for kilometres of powder-white sand and warm Indian Ocean water. Snorkel the coral reef, kite-surf, or take a dhow out at sunset.

Lamu Old Town

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lamu is the oldest continually inhabited Swahili settlement. There are almost no cars, just donkeys, dhows and coral-stone houses with carved wooden doors.

Lake Nakuru and the Rift Valley

Lake Nakuru draws flamingos in their thousands and is a stronghold for both black and white rhino. The wider Rift Valley lakes, including Naivasha and Bogoria, are superb for birdlife.

Nairobi National Park

The world's only national park bordering a capital city. You can photograph lions and giraffes with Nairobi's skyline behind them, then visit the nearby David Sheldrick elephant orphanage.

Samburu National Reserve

In the arid north, Samburu is home to species you won't see in the Mara: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and the gerenuk antelope. The Ewaso Ng'iro River draws elephants and leopards.

Hell's Gate National Park

Near Naivasha, Hell's Gate is one of the few parks you can explore on foot or by bicycle, cycling past zebra and warthog through dramatic gorges that inspired The Lion King.
