Why Kenya's cities surprise travelers
Kenya is famous for safaris, but its cities are where the country's culture, food and history come alive. From a buzzing capital to ancient coral-stone towns on the Indian Ocean, here are the best cities to visit and what makes each one worth your time.
Nairobi
The capital is East Africa's commercial heart and a surprisingly green city. It mixes glass towers, leafy suburbs and world-class wildlife on its doorstep.
- Highlight: Nairobi National Park, the only national park bordering a capital, where you can photograph rhinos and giraffes with skyscrapers behind them. Pair it with the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage.
Mombasa
Kenya's second city and main port has a sun-baked, layered identity shaped by Arab, Portuguese, Indian and Swahili influence. The Old Town's narrow lanes smell of cardamom and grilled mishkaki.
- Highlight: Fort Jesus, a 16th-century Portuguese fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking the harbour.
Lamu
On an island off the north coast, Lamu is the best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. There are almost no cars, just donkeys and dhow boats.
- Highlight: Wandering Lamu Old Town's coral-stone alleys, then sailing a traditional dhow at sunset.
Kisumu
Kenya's third-largest city sits on the shores of Lake Victoria, the giant freshwater lake it shares with Uganda and Tanzania. It is relaxed, lakeside and rich in Luo culture.
- Highlight: A sunset boat trip on Lake Victoria, often with hippos and fish eagles, followed by fresh tilapia at Dunga Beach.
Nakuru
Gateway to the Great Rift Valley, Nakuru is a fast-growing city ringed by lakes and volcanic landscapes.
- Highlight: Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for flamingos, rhinos and lions, all within minutes of town.
Malindi
This coastal town has a strong Italian flavour thanks to decades of visitors, plus excellent beaches and reefs.
- Highlight: Snorkelling and diving in Malindi Marine National Park, Kenya's oldest marine reserve.
Practical tips
- The Madaraka Express train links Nairobi and Mombasa in about five hours and is comfortable and affordable.
- Carry Kenyan shillings for markets, though cards and M-Pesa mobile money are widely accepted.
- Coastal towns are hot and humid; the highland cities like Nairobi and Nakuru are cooler.
