Indonesia has two seasons
Straddling the equator, Indonesia skips spring and autumn entirely. Instead there is a dry season (roughly April to October) and a wet season (November to March). Temperatures stay warm year-round, hovering around 27-32°C in the lowlands, while highland areas like Bali's Ubud or Java's mountains feel noticeably cooler.
Dry season: the peak window
The dry season is the best all-round time to visit. Skies are clearer, the sea is calmer for diving in Raja Ampat, Komodo and the Gili Islands, and surf in Bali's Uluwatu is at its best.
- July and August are the absolute peak: school holidays plus European summer mean higher prices and busy beaches in Kuta, Canggu and Seminyak.
- Book Bali villas and Komodo liveaboards months ahead for these weeks.
Shoulder season: the sweet spot
For the best balance of weather, price and space, aim for the shoulder months.
- April to June brings dry, green landscapes and thinner crowds before the July rush.
- September and October are excellent for diving and trekking, with rates dropping after the high season.
Wet season: green and quiet
The wet season does not mean constant rain. Expect short, heavy afternoon downpours, then sunshine. January and February are the wettest, and seas can be rough for boat trips to Nusa Penida or Flores.
- Upside: lush rice terraces, lower prices, fewer tourists and dramatic skies.
- Avoid remote diving and small-boat island hops during peak rains.
Key festivals and events by month
- March: Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence, when the whole island shuts down for 24 hours. The night before brings spectacular Ogoh-Ogoh monster parades.
- March-April: Bali Spirit Festival in Ubud, blending yoga, dance and world music.
- June: Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar runs for about a month of dance and gamelan.
- June-July: Jember Fashion Carnaval in East Java, one of Asia's biggest street carnivals.
- August 17: Independence Day, with village races and flag ceremonies nationwide.
- October-November: Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, a major literary gathering.
- Varies: Eid al-Fitr (Lebaran) triggers mass domestic travel; expect packed transport and closures.
Quick recommendation
For first-timers, May, June, September offer warm, mostly dry weather without peak prices. Surfers and divers should favour June to September, while budget travellers who do not mind rain can find great value from November to February.
